im having trouble getting facebook connect to work correctly with my current installation.

the plugin fails to register users and only redirects to the callback url that i setup in the facebook application.

I am running my site locally(localhost.localdomain) for the time being and evertyhing else works fine. im using wordpress 2.9.1 and buddypress 1.1.3.

I know the plugin is active and working to some extent because it shows the facebook connect button.

Any advice on what the issue is?

Make sure that you have the Connect URL correct in your application settings in Facebook.. go to My Applications in facebook then go to Edit Settings and then “Connect”. Then fill in your site url.. let me know if that works :)

@Bowe since you seem to be in the know about connect.

I’ve read several times in the past about the code of that plugin to be badly suitable for bp. People recommended not to use that plugin and wait for a better integration.

    Any news on that front?

No not really.. I’m currently testing the RPX plugin and that seems to work with Facebook, Twitter and all other major sites.. only problem it has is that it does not fetch the email adress.. That’s the closest i’ve gotten so far :)

does that plugin work with BP?

yep! so far it works pretty darn well.. For certain social networks it imports photos and basic info.. I’ve integrated it with my custom login widget and so far I haven’t seen any major problems besides not storing the user his email, which makes receiving updates/notifications through email impossible… I need to think of a way to solve that problem..

Hmm such a shame. No one planning a complete BP-FB Connect integration then?

Andy Peatling ported the FB Connect plugin to work in MU/BP. Any functionality or bug issues about FB Connect need to go to whoever is the original author.

DJPaul with all due respect I don’t know why you are so dismissive of a FB connect feature??? Let me say as someone who actually uses the software to run a community, this is a very important feature and has become almost a de-facto “must have” to grow a small social community. The easier you can make it for people to join the larger and more diverse your BuddyPress users and community will be. While I might not like some things about Facebook personally turning a blind eye towards effectively using FBConnect is literally like shooting oneself in the foot. Just like changing the default theme was critical to wider adoption, I can assure you having good social connect features will help broaden BuddyPress’s appeal even more.

Anyone tried to contact the original fb connect plugin author before?

@Derek DJPaul is not being dismissive of the FB Connect feature. I would wager that he likes it as much as you. What he’s trying to do is get you to find support for it at the right place….the author. He certainly realizes that it is a poerful community growing tool and important to the BP community but, given the BP team didn’t write the plugin, how can they provide support for it? If Andy did the port, he did it as a side project as it is not part of BP core. He might be able to help with your problem.

I’ve been using RPX plugin, but I still haven’t figured out to sync user avatars.

There’s a hack with using user local avatars plugin for wordpress, but it doesn’t seem to work well with 1.2 RC3.
