FB Connect Plugin + BP 1.1 and Future?

  • @korhanekinci

    I have bp 1.0.3, wpmu 2.8.1 and bbpress 1.0.1.

FB connect plugin is working ok, except for some problems like no fb-connect button in wp-login.php pages and that it can be better integrated with bbpress forum pages and user blogs (for example; logging in any page besides bp pages).

I really want to know the future of this plugin. Will it be compatible with bp 1.1 version which suppossed to come out 17th August, for which we are all excited about? Will it have invite friends feature like gigya.com’s, some time soon?

In my website, almost half of my members signup through this plugin. I am just afraid that after upgrading to 1.1 and if I can’t have the plugin work, what will my members who signed up through fbconnect do? Easy answer is off course register again the normal way! But I wish this plugin would develop parallel to the changes in bp.

I also wish that invite friends feature (this one http://bp-dev.org/plugins/invite-friends/ is not working with bp 1.0.3) would also be available as separate or all in one plugin.

In my case, this is one of the main issues that has to be solved.

Any info or help? Or updates?

As far as I am aware, BP-FB Connect is not supported. It’s doesn’t even currently work properly, really. It is a port/bodge of a FB Connect plugin for WordPress.

I don’t know if the WordPress FB Connect plugin is support/still under development, but I know the WPMU/BP-version FB Connect isn’t.

Would anyone be interested in supporting this plugin? Anyone else in my position so that we can maybe hire someone together to support the plugin?

Would be amazing to see FB connect just built into Buddypress. Would help communities starting out with BP to establish users. Would also help get more people downloading and implementing BP due to the popularity of FB.

If it just worked on the standard install of BP then it would appeal to a huge audience and issues like this wouldn’t be much of a question.

@roadblock I totally agree with you, but it seems developers do not think so.

We should be looking for alternatives, gigya seems to be one.

    It was implemented at http://outgaylife.com

Seems most people that were previously loving the FaceBook/WordPress bridge have shifted their attention over to RPX as a better alternative for allowing users to register and login from anywhere.

Regarding the FaceBook Connect plugin (and most others really) someone will usually come along and take it over when they have a personal need that is bad enough to do it. Tends to happen with most abandoned projects as time goes on.

I’m sure Andy will chime in as to whether or not he plans to support it going forward.

I actually contacted gigya a few days ago, and they informed me that buddypress + wpmu plugin is on their roadmap.

Today I asked them if they could give an estimate time, when that would happen and did not get an answer yet. I will post the answer here once I get it.

I have one other concern and I hope this is not a stupid question!

If say, gigya or someone else comes with a plugin soon and I implement it on my site, deactivating the fb-connect plugin I use today. What will happen to the members that I already have through fb-connect? Their blogs? Acccount? etc…

Will they have to sign in again through the new plugin?

    Any advice pls?

Is there a facebook auth strategy stable enough to attempt to get running with current release code (wpmu 284 / bp 103)?
