followers VS friends

Hi guys, can someone explain me what’s the difference between following a member and having him as friend ?
What’s the purpose of each functionnality ?

Btw; i’m working on a classified ads component and i would like to have a functionnality to automatically warn members when particular users posted new ads.

The idea is to have the ability of “following” an ad author; but I don’t understand if I have to add a specific “follow” function for my plugin or if I could integrate that (and if this is a good idea) with the core system.

    Any suggestion ?

@grosbouff There is the BP Followers Plugin by @apeatling for your reference

One difference between Friends and Followers is that Friends is in core while Followers feature needs the plugin to be activated.

The other difference is Followers is ala Twitter following. The “follower” doesn’t need to be approved by the one he follows. While for “Friends” to connect completely friendship request must be approved by the other party.

So in other words you can follow someone but be their mortal enemy – as the saying goes ” keep your friends close but your enemies closer”

It’s possible that ‘Follwers/Following’ is more useful than ‘Friends’ I’m trying to see – at the moment – what the problems are or may be with having both of these active or ‘Friends’ deactivated
