Forum Posts Not Showing Up

    @kopper65

I am using WordPress 2.9.2 and I have just installed the latest version of BuddyPress. Everything seems to be installed correctly but I can’t get the forum to work. When I am logged in and try to post a new forum discussion, I click the “New Topic” button, type my message (title/content/tags) and then click “Post Topic,” nothing happens. Or rather, the forum seems to just refresh with the same message:

“Sorry, there were no forum topics found.”

I have tried this several times yet I can’t get any forum topics to show up. What am I doing wrong?

“Post in group forum” shows no groups to select… could that be it? I tried creating a “General Discussion Group” in the BuddyPress admin area, but that is not showing up for some reason. Is that was is causing the problem?

    The website is http://www.koppfamily.net

    Thanks,
    kopper

it seems you only have one group setup (which is private) so is the forum enabled for that group?

We actually have three groups… one public and two private (two of them set up for testing purposes). The “test group” there now is public. The private groups are not showing up in the drop-down menu when you go to post a new topic in the Group Forums Directory at the “Forums” tab. We found this previously submitted ticket (Ticket #2072) about this issue:

    https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/2072

I’m not doing anything wrong, it turns out. This is just the way BP is designed. You’d think if you were signed in, and you belonged to a private group, that they would let you have access to that group when posting from the Group Forums Directory! This should not be considered an “enhancement” at all. It’s just poorly designed and illogical… Go figure.

A little further explanation: I am setting this site up for my family. I did not want to create a public forum, mainly because I don’t want our family discussions publicly viewable. So I had set my original group up as private. Since I did not have a public group, I was unable to post anything from the “Forums” tab (Group Forums Directory) since private groups are not shown in the drop-down menu there. This is where the confusion arose and why I started this topic. It was not until we set up a public group that we figured out that it was set up this way on purpose. So since our site will not have any public groups, I have disabled bbPress Forums from the BuddyPress Component Setup in the WordPress Dashboard.

regards to the drop down… the group loop (in theme forums/index.php) which only displays public groups needs another || check for:
    groups_is_user_member( $bp->loggedin_user->id, bp_get_group_id() )

but if you disable bbPress buddypress component you won’t be able to post any forum topics ;)

though, if a family site – why not lock down the entire site only to logged in users? (a few threads floating around here how to do that)

“but if you disable bbPress buddypress component you won’t be able to post any forum topics”

Sure I will… I will just have to post them from the Groups tab instead. Disabling bbPress Forums only removes the “Forums” tab, which is useless for my needs, anyway.

    If you disable
BuddyPress -> Component Setup -> “bbPress Forums – Activates bbPress forum support within BuddyPress groups or any other custom component.”

You won’t be able to post any group forum topics

    If you disable
BuddyPress -> General Settings -> “Disable global forum directory?:”

That will remove the tab and /forums index

I have exactly the same issue as per your first post here Jeff… although my site is public.
I’d like to iron out the crease in my forum too. the website is at http://www.my-kinesiologist.com/

It seems that I can post, but my subscriber members can’t – they just get the error message “Sorry, there were no forum topics found.”. Not sure why. One member who has editor rights on the site can’t post to groups other than the one she has created…

Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks. Brendan

Can someone post this as a bug in the trac for 1.2.5 milestone please? I’ll be sure to get it fixed in the next release.

I am Having this same problem. I have a fresh WP/BP install and the “Disable global forum directory?” is set to no.
The forum tab shows up on the site but the page always says “Sorry, there were no forum topics found.”
If I add a new topic and hit submit. the form submits and the page refreshes… but it still says “Sorry, there were no forum topics found.”
    Did that topic disappear?

My site is public and I have only one group set up. If possible I would like to not have to bury the global forum in a group.

Seems I misunderstood The way the global forum works. I think I have it working and in my case it was user error.

I was thinking it would be a forum in it’s self. Where i could organize threads based on categories and post topics to these threads. But instead it’s just an aggregation of all of the group forums in one place.

i was getting the same error. “Sorry, there were no forum topics found.” on my site Funjog.Net
I just uninstalled all the plug ins and than i tried to post new forum topics and i was able to create new forums topics.
After creating some forum topics i installed and activate plug in again and everything was fine. Now i am able to post new forums topics and my plug ins are also activated.
So just uninstall all your plug ins and than try to create new forum topics.
Hope this will also work for you.
