Herulean effort required to sort member listing by Last Name, First Name?

Hello – I find it pretty strange that the member listing can’t be sorted alphabetically by last name. That would seem to me to be the most commonly desired default format. I can’t think of any membership site or directory I’ve ever seen (online or even on paper) that isn’t sorted by last name.
Have I just completely missed this somehow and am too dumb to figure this out?
If it can’t be done this way now, how big an effort would it be to create this feature? It would seem like one approach would be to create an additional view and order by last name, and then run the same member page display code. So it seems at a glance to almost be a trivial exercise?
