How do i creat a child theme???

I have been reading everything i can on creating a child theme but cant seem to do it without creating a multisite…. I was to edit the ftp through godaddy but it still did not work. it seems that i may need to edit through filezilla but it does not seem to allow me to log in to that…. please help!!!
