How does “Current Location” work in Profile Fields?

in the current BP signup page, there is a “current location” field. It’s not a drop-down menu of counties, states, zips, etc., but just a blank input field.
Is there some code behind this that will transform an input into a specific map location? Geographic location is hugely imortant on my site and I’m just trying to get my head around this.
Finally, is this a new feature for 1.2.4?
