How to show field-froups on Registration form?

This has been asked before, but solutions i’ve seen so far are years old, or thread contain several different methods which other users report give errors and whatnot.

I don’t mind php, just asking for the recipe.

i’m studying this. Seems quite involved to implement my request. Wondering if the latest release of this patch is functional/safe.

i would say the amount of discussion/attempted solutions on this topic is a good indication of how much people would love it!
