Is BuddyPress Install Currently Broken?

I have tried the simple installation of adding the plugin in wordpress. However this does not work. I have also tried the manual download and install in the plugins folder. This also does not work. When manually uploading to ftp buddypress will appear in the wordpress plugins area, but when I try to activate I get:

Error 500 – Internal server error
An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.

I have been tring to install this for three days using both wordpress and wordpress mu neither of these help the problem.

    What is up with BuddyPress?

no problems here on various configs – disable all other wordpress plugins first? (maybe a conflict?) anything in the log files?

I deleted all other plugins and it still will not work. I try to add BuddyPress plugin and it begins with this message:
    Downloading install package from https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/buddypress.1.2.4.1.zip.
    Unpacking the package.
    But nothing happens.

Make sure that your WordPress installation is working before adding BuddyPress. Your hosting package must meet these requirements at a minimum. Also, as rich! @ etiviti ( @nuprn1 ) states, you can learn a lot about potential install issues by checking your server’s log files.

I am also having the same problem. I have deactivated all other plugins. My hosting package (1and1) supports all the minimum requirement. I tried automatic install and it stuck on unpacking the package. I tried manual install and it brings up the below error on activation.

Error 500 – Internal server error
An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.

    Please help?
