Mapology – Adding maps for users and groups

    Hey all,

about a week ago I started to extract various parts from various custom plugins I’ve written and Mapology appeared.

It adds a Google Map v3 for both the user and groups directory. It uses MarkerClusterer, so it doesn’t matter how many users/groups your site has, the map will always be smooth.

You have to create a profile field, e.g. Current Location, and the plugin will geocode the location from that field and display that information on the profile and on the overview map. It also integrates with the activity stream (uses Google Static Maps).

Then you can chose to add a group overview map. This will add address fields to the group and geocode the location from that.

You can have a look at an example here:
    http://test.shabushabu.eu/

Please note that this plugin will have a price tag attached to it. Likely around EUR 20 net. Included in the price is support.
It’ll be available within a week on http://shop.shabushabu.eu/

    Future fefatures:
    * Custom infowindows (the default infowindows have some restrictions, like a min. width)
    * Routes support (great for travel sites for example)
    * Whatever else we can think of :)

Wow, nicely done. I wasn’t expecting the ability to create routes within the system (was expecting just uploads) that’s bloody awesome! Can’t wait for the first release :)

    Boris,
How about adding activity stream filter support for showing members’ activity within a radius.

Like, show me all activity within 50 km, etc.

The second coding round for routes is in. Routes can now be edited, activity comments can be posted on routes and routes can be included in blog posts (depending on the privacy setting). Also, coordinates can now be attached to blog posts and a map can then be displayed on the actual blog post. For both post and route maps, a shortcode creator has been integrated into the Add Media button on write/edit screens in the backend.

@travel-junkie Hot damn! It’s looking brilliant thus far, keep up the good work!

Even though it still needs some testing on Google Earth, KML files for each route can be downloaded now from a single route view. The plan is to eventually build a sitemap of all KML files that can then be submitted to Google.

The latest dev version of Mapology adds a custom post type called Locations. This can be used to add generic information for a certain location (kinda lika a wiki), rather than more detailed information through a blog post. It also adds custom taxonomies (continents/countries/areas) for posts, pages and locations and coordinates for pages and locations rather than just posts.

    Thanks Man, Good work

So we can have a map on our homepage that displays all the members (users)?

Where can we purchase Mapology plugin when it is ready?

It’ll be available at http://shop.shabushabu.eu. Mapology adds overview maps for members and groups by default.

I’ll post a message here on this thread as well once it’s available.

We have also just included theme templates for the custom post type and the custom taxonomies.

Proximity filtering is in for activity items. The code for groups is in as well, but the necessary filtering options aren’t present in BP 1.2.6, so it’ll only become active for BP 1.3. It’s in trunk already.

Alright, I’ve decided to port over some things from Buddyvents, like the grid view, for the first release. It will be available in our shop someday today (17.11.) for the price of EUR 50 net.

For all current features and features that will make it in over the course of v1.x/v2.x you can have a look here:
    http://test.shabushabu.eu/2010/11/mapology-readme/

This is a test site, so you can register and try it on for size before deciding if it fits your needs.

Same as with Buddyvents, support is inclusive of the price for as long as the version stays 1.x. For v2.0 it will have to be purchased again at half price.

@travel-junkie Mapology is looking stellar! Just checked out the group overlay and wow, way to go! To fill folks in, if a group has many maps/routes, the overlay shows all the relevant routes on a single map to easily see all routes in relation to each other. Brilliant!

    Hi @travel-junkie,

Would be nice that users could post location and associate it to a group.

    Boris, this is looking great!
On your test site, I can see all activity within a range. Filtering doesn’t work yet, but “all activities” works great.

Maybe, until BP 1.3, you could have the distance filter only show when the main filter is set to “no filter”?

    @gregfielding
What do you mean that filtering doesn’t work? Just checked on the test site and it does :) Group filtering doesn’t until 1.3, but activity filtering works good.

    @travel-junkie

I mean that if I click the Main Activity Tab it I go to the activity page with “no filter” as the default and a blank Within field. If I select Within: 750Km, it shows me all activity of members (and I assume groups) within 750km. Brilliant.

But, if I try and filter further and just look for blog posts within 750km, it breaks and shows me ALL blog posts. The “Within” filter seems to only work if there is no other filter selected.

Ah, ok. I’ll have a look. Please use our support forums. Any reports and/or requests will get noticed a lot earlier.

    Hi there,
I am a bit of a newbie to WP, and am looking to extend the group search feature. Your plugin looks like it may do the job. I have a question though…
    – How easy will it be to add a search page allowing a user to search for a group by name and/or city and/or postcode and/or distance from location?
    Thanks

    Boris,

I have a few questions. I really like what you’re offering in Shabushabu and have questions about utility.

    1. So this map can be added to each user profile to correlate to their location. Can you set it to private?

    2. On your events plugin can you set the event geo tag to correlate with the profile. Meaning if you have a profile search event, to create begin and end point for instant navigation.

    3. Is this offered to the US? I’m not sure what the prices are for us here.

    Thanks,
    Jeremiah

Although I’m very excited about this plugin. This test drive made me weary. Is this a plugin related error?

Although I’m excited about what Mapology has to offer, the locations tab disheartens me.

    Thanks,

Hi all. The plugin seems to be not covered anymore by the author. Is it right?
    Where I can download it?
