Metadata to link buddypress users and posts.

Ive asked a similar question to this but without an answer, so I thought id rephrase the question.
Basically I want to be able to link buddypress users and page/posts using common metadata (checkbox values).
The aim of this is too be able to tag books (posts) with a genre, and allow a user at registration to define which genres they are interested in.
The problem is that the data must be the same. In other words the genres must be one managable list which can be associated with both users and posts.
It is in some ways similar to this solution to define user types however they have hardcoded the values rather than taking from a pre-defined custom feild of checkboxes:
