nickname clears first_name and last_name

I have found an issue – when a user changes the nickname / name (primary group) first_name and last_name is cleared. If the primary group had both first_name and last_name it would work. Because wp_insert_user() actually checks if first_name is set and if it is not – a blank is saved. Same goes for last_name.

Have any body found a work-around for this?

Actually It is solved if I disable profile sync between wordpress and buddypress – but what does that mean any way? Will it kill my client side to disable profile sync?

This is actually a significant problem for running BuddyPress with MemberPress, because MemberPress (and I’m guessing a lot of ecommerce plugins) require a First Name and Last Name for checkout. I don’t understand why BuddyPress doesn’t just update WP’s “Display name publicly as” field and leave alone the first/last fields. It seems very common in a social network for individuals to want to use a handle rather than their full name.
