You’re referring to BuddyPress Followers plugin, right? What theme are you using? Follow button shows up/works when you’re using bp-default theme or WP theme with BP Template Pack. If you’re using custom BP theme, check if it has “ in custom theme’s /members/single/member-header.php

Yes, I’m trying to use BP Followers. I’m using a WP theme. How do I get a BP Template Pack?

To make your WP theme compatible with BuddyPress, you’ll need to install and activate BP Template Pack plugin then go through Appearance > BP Compatibility process

Ok, I’m trying to download the template pack, but it tries to open in Windows Photo Viewer. Is that right?

I too am having this problem. I’m using a custom theme from RocketThemes. I looked in the member-header.php file and it has that line of code you listed.

On my member profile pages it only lists “Add Friend” Public Message” & “Private Message.”

Ok, I’m either a dope of way too tired. I forgot to activate the plugin. It works well on the member page but in the listing of members/users, the Follow button kind of merges into the “Add Friend: button. Here is a screenshot: http://forcedreality.net/merged.png

What page would I need to edit to add something like a break tag?

@roxanne-bland not right. Go to dashboard menu, Plugins > Add New and enter “bp template pack” in keyword and click on “install” button in pop-up.

@BlinkyBill01 you don’t need to add a break tag. Instead, you could make all buttons line up horizontally or vertically via adding styles to your buttons in your theme’s stylesheet. You can use Firebug, a Firefox add-on, to check what selector you’d need to style the buttons.

Thanks @mercime. Sadly, the RocketTheme theme I’m using has a blank style.css and has a ton of broken up .css files that the gantry framework call. Right now I’ve got 252 .css files so I’ve got no clue what I’m looking for or where to add the horizontal/vertical style.

When i checked in Firebug, I got a huge list that had a ton of css files linked to it. I saw that it called for a generic-button but the only one I found in the css files listed was in bp.css in my Gantry-Buddypress plugin. After adding some horizontal/vertical code, it didn’t do anything to the buttons or how they view on the page. :/

    1. You should be using BuddyPress 1.5.4 with WP 3.3.1
    2. You need to have “pretty permalinks” ==> dashboard menu Settings > Permalinks – and set permalinks to other than default.

Thanks @mercime. I read BP’s description of 1.5.4 and that’s not what I want. All I want is for people to be able to follow my blog if they so wish. I’ll keep looking for plugins that’ll do that. Unless you have a suggestion…?

If I do decide to use BP, what would I set permalinks to? Custom?

@roxanne-bland, Buddy press is a “create your own social network” type plugin.

if you are looking for something that will allow people to “follow” your blog you are either looking for something passive, like setting up an obvious RSS link on your blog and encouraging those who use RSS to follow yours

Or if you are looking for something more active, then something that will email your “readers” when you post to your site.

Currently out of the box people can “follow” a wordpress blog if they wish, usually via RSS or bookmarking the site. So i’m not really 100% sure what your are looking for?

I just wanted a button that people could click to follow my blog. Sort of like Google Friends. Emailing my readers would be good, too. I have an RSS feed.

BuddyPress Followers plugin works only with BuddyPress plugin activated.

I recommend that you post at WordPress forums for assistance in seeking for plugin/s that would meet your needs. Before posting there, you might consider searching for such plugins first like https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=follow
