permalinks break links

ive seen this topic come up a few times but havnt found a fix.

installed buddypress fine and it loads the last message i get for buddypress to be fully working is to change the permalinks away from default however anything but default causes the pages to kick up not found error

The requested URL /Side0Projects/FFC/index.php was not found on this server.

even though the file is clearly there, changing it back to default fixes the broken links but then i have buddypressing telling me to to switch off of default permalinks again, any fix for this?

    thanks

@nicholas-ritson Windows server? Did you add index.php to the permalink structure for pretty permalinks? It won’t work with BuddyPress. Use the first example posted in https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#Permalinks_without_mod_rewrite or contact webhost for assistance

thanks, got the links working now and buddy press isnt listing any more issues but while everything is linked are the pages supposed to be all blank?

how would i add the functions to them like the forum etc (i have gone to the forum option and installed it.

i originally chose the default theme but am now slightly editing it using a child theme. have tried going to the default theme again and still same problem.

just a quick update, when using the navigation links on the site it doesnt break, when using the dropdown menu from the top right those links break still.
