Private messaging user blocking/ignoring?

    @donburikun

    Buddypress 2.2 was just released today with a couple of great new features.
    Are there any plans to add user blocking/ignoring (silent block) to private messaging to address spammer and harassment issues? This is really one of the must have missing features for Buddypress.

  • Yes, but I don’t think we know when that might happen yet (probably several months away as an indication, no promises).

    I wonder if there’s a plugin that does this now.

    Yes, BuddyBlock

    Thank you for your reply Paul. That is encouraging to hear! So “possibly” in one of the upcoming Buddypress releases. 🙂 I would not imagine it would be too much of a stretch to develop that but I suppose it is a matter of how best to develop it with the least impact to the existing ecosystem to ensure compatibility.

    If I might add, the option to silently block/ignore someone would be a great benefit. This way the offending party (spammer, harasser, etc) do not know they are being blocked.

    @shanebp
    . Thank you, I am considering BuddyBlock but am hopeful this functionality is added to the core component. Fingers crossed.

    Another option might be something like this: https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-private-message-for-friends-only/. I haven’t used it myself, so I’m not positive it still works.

    Thank you for the link. I have also found the below:

    Introducing BuddyPress Message Privacy Plugin

    I am leaning toward Buddyblock but would like to wait for this functionality to be introduced to the core product to ensure compatibility and support down the road. It will really bring Buddypress to another level to have this added in and it is very encouraging to hear they are considering to add it.

    BuddyBlock is compatible with BuddyPress 1.7 or higher, including BuddyPress 2.2
    BuddyBlock will be supported down the road.

    Hey,

    @shanebp
    as I understand it, your plugin serves as sort of a ‘blacklist’ where you can block any user in a variety of ways. Have you considered making it the other way around? Whereby ALL other users were blocked from sending a Public or Private Message *unless* the User clicked on a button that added the other user to a ‘whitelist’?

    If the user B clicked on a ‘Message’ button, they would be precluded from sending a message to User A unless User B had already been whitelisted by the recipient/User A. Maybe with the attempt generating a prompt to User B to submit a whitelist approval request to User A.

    Maybe something like this already exists?

    Something for consideration. Thoughts?

    Thanks.

    Are there any plans for the below:

    – Official inclusion to Buddypress?
    – Add the option so that when a user is blocked that only their private messages are blocked?
    – Add the option so that when a user gets blocked they are not aware of it (shadow block)? In other words they will not receive any notification that they are being blocked.

    Assuming you mean the plugins discussed here a year ago, no plans.

    Beyond that, your questions are best addressed to the plugin author via their website.

    it would be great to introduce it on Privacy account, only friends can write me.
