problem creating groups

I have a fresh install of the latest wordpress and buddypress 1.5 – I have all components checked, including the allow groups option.
When I go to the groups page I can click on the create group tab, then it takes me to the create group page. I name my group, I select the type of group and who can edit group settings. Then I go to the next step and select an avatar, it uploads fine – then I go to the next step and click on finish. After I click on finish it takes me back to the groups page without creating the group.
When I try to go through the process of creating a group, when I get to the avatar selection it shows the avatar that I uploaded the first time.
anyone else having a problem creating groups on a fresh install?
