Question about the future..

    @chriscarter

    I\’ve been thinking a lot about future compatibility issues; bear with me while I try to convey my paranoia. Say we have WPMU, BP, and bbPress all working together as they should. Down the road when WPMU hits 2.7.1 and BP hits its full release, what\’s to say bbPress will still work correctly with them? Or what will happen a year from now if bbPress changes their code in such a way that it no longer plays nicely with BP? Would Andy, hypothetically, rewrite the BP code to MAKE it work? Or would we scrap bbPress for a different forum engine?

    From my non-technical mind it seems that everything is working now because it\’s been glued together with integration plugins between bbPress and BP, WPMU and bbPress. Am I wrong to think that, as time goes on, these bonds will weaken and not strengthen? What sort of practices are in place to keep systemic failures from occurring each time a new version of something is released?

    I understand that BP is a set of plugins and not a separate entity such as bbPress, but I hope my questions are clear. Thanks.

  • Since all three are primarily developed by people working for Automattic, you can expect them to continue to work together. You should also expect them to integrate even better in the future. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

    Chris, that is a question that most likely is on the mind of many people. While I am not with Automattic and don’t speak for them, my experience has been that bbPress will always be designed to integrate with WP as it is developed by many of the same team. I can also say that WPMU is always going to be synced with the same code as WP and will also work with bbPress. Going even further, buddypress is written based off working with WPMU (soon to be WP as well).

    While the timing of releases will require attention to what versions work with each other, there will always be a solution that works. You can be sure of that. Once stable releases come out, they will work together. If you are one of the people that always wants to use the development versions going forward, you will find issues. That is the nature of the beast, but all and all, all should be fine!

    Personally, I will always be alerting Buddypress users to what works. Most likely, I will also let people know what doesn’t work since I always am testing all of the software packages on a regular basis (both stable and development).

    Hope that helps :)

    It’s my intention to make bbPress integration with WPMU and BuddyPress even simpler and better over time. Many changes have already been made to both WPMU and bbPress core to help BuddyPress along and that cooperation will exist in the future.

    How about bbpress plugins in the forum working on buddypress CMS, would it happen?
