Registration field verification?

Hello BuddyPress community. I’m looking to modify the registration functionality for a members only community. I’m working with a professional group where every member of this group has a unique member number. Upon registering for the site, I’d like to check this numeric value against the member list which I can store in a file, or a table in the database.
Does anyone have any tips/method for verifying a custom field value prior to processing BuddyPress registration?
