User Reg ?: Params requested on registration vs. BPs OOB fields

Hello all. I have simple questions regarding the OOB BP installation with respect to users registering for the first time on my site. I just can’t seem to find what I’m looking for, so please don’t think I haven’t done my due diligence. I’ve finally “inferred” through no “overt” statements that BP users are indeed WP users.

Here are my questions, with some prefacing information:

Wordpress requires “x” parameters (or information) when a user registers for your WP site.
BP, out of the box, only has “Name” has a required parameter under “Extended Profile Fields”.

When a user registers for the first time on my WordPress site, what actual information will they be required to enter? For example:

    1. Will I need to create custom fields that include the required information for a regular WordPress user? Or does BP include that already, and it’s just not listed there?

    2. If it’s listed there, can anyone point me to any moderate to full documentation on front-end or back-end documentation on how users and user roles and such work? I can work with either. I’m not all that worried about database schemas, but I can infer the front end information from it. I’d just really like to find a place that can give me a full wiki of information, rather than having to jump from the codex to here, and not be able to find what I need, then go to buddydev.com and not find what I need there, then search in google.

    Much appreciated in advance.

    Thanks all!

    Michelle

    1. WordPress (without BP) only has three required fields for members – username, email and password. On the BuddyPress registration form these are required fields. it also requires a name and any other required fields you choose to add to the base group.

    2. The best place to find documentation is within the code. Not exactly what you wanted to hear, but theirs not really anything as in-depth as you can find within the comments scattered throughout it.
