Username incorrect in Private Message

I’m trying to send a private message to another user (or any user) and it gives me an error that the username is incorrect. I have tried several users and their usernames as well as full names. I have no dropdown or anything I’m just typing them in. Is there supposed to be a drop down? I need help with this ASAP we are trying to launch and this will hold everything up. I can provide login information in a private message, but it is not a current live site.

Does anyone have any ideas? This is not a good way of doing support… need email or messaging.

What have you tried to diagnose the problem so far?
Have a quick read through https://buddypress.org/support/topic/when-asking-for-support-2/
Have you tried using a supported theme such as twenty twenty, disabled other plugins etc?
