Anyone have a current solution for displaying only usernames across BuddyPress, instead of usernames + display names?

I’ve gotten too many complaints from members who keep getting confused (because the same person has different names, in different places).

I’ve been searching the web for hours, with no luck. I did find this:

BuddyPress Usernames Only

But it seems to be abandoned and it throws php error in my logs. I’ve seen a couple other functions, but nothing seems updated or seems to work.
