    1. not to be a dick but it would help a lot if you could create a better topic title than WTF??

    2. that error smells really fishy…almost spam like. scary. curious to see what comes of it

the topic was not the best, but thats what I though about this. Anyone seen this before or have ideas?

Try to access the subdomain (blog) directly you get this:

    Great Success !

Apache is working on your cPanel® and WHM™ Server

If you can see this page, then the people who manage this server have installed cPanel and WebHost Manager (WHM) which use the Apache Web server software and the Apache Interface to OpenSSL (mod_ssl) successfully. They now have to add content to this directory and replace this placeholder page, or else point the server at their real content.

    ATTENTION!

If you are seeing this page instead of the site you expected, please contact the administrator of the site involved. (Try sending an email to <webmaster@domain>.) Although this site is running cPanel, WebHost Manager, and Apache software it almost certainly has no other connection to cPanel Inc. or the Apache Group. Please do not send mail about this site or its contents to cPanel Inc. or the Apache Group.

    About cPanel:

cPanel is a leading provider of software for the webhosting industry. If you would like to learn more about cPanel please visit our website at http://www.cpanel.net. Please be advised that cPanel Inc. is not a web hosting company, and as such has no control over content found elsewhere on this site.

    About Apache HTTP Server:

The Apache HTTP Server is an open source web server which powers many of the worlds web sites. The Apache HTTP server is part of the Apache Group’s many influential projects. Their efforts have helped shape much the world wide web, and they continue to be a dominating force in the web hosting industry.

Realfam, I’ve seen that kinda generic ‘apache is alive and well here’ screen. It showed up when I didn’t do all the steps needed to get mu setup correctly. I just made sure that I went thru and did *everything* in the mu install readme doc.

    – mod_rewrite turned on

    – httpd.conf configured correctly. <Directory> and <Virtual Host> directives

    – DNS wildcard subdomains setup in my nameserver

    – Do I have an .htaccess file in the doc root of my mu install?

When I did that these kind of problems went away.

mikepratt is right realfam. How old are you? Try to be more descriptive of the issue in your topic title please. Sudden emergencies due to incorrect mu and apache configurations are your problem. Just like problems related to my inexperience and stupidity are my problems.

mu requires a certain level of experience that only comes by solving my own problems. If I just throw up my hands and give the problem to the universe I get ignored.

You’re not a dick Mike. That’s my job. I guess I can share the responsibilities though. If I have to.

I did that, before you posted the solution, and it seems there was an issue with the wildcard DNS. Thanks for the help though.

When things go nuts like that realfam it’s related to linux, apache or nameserver type stuff. Glad it got solved.

I have been having problems with my MU installation. I finally found a step-by-step ebook that explains the changes that have to be made to DNS and more. Here’s a link:

    Installing WordPressMu – The E-Book

Very clear and easy to understand. Hope it helps.

There are days I realize how lucky I am to host with ASO – I simply send these guys a support request to enable wildcard DNS for WPMU and 5 minutes later I got things working.

Well, I kind of am my own hosting company. :-D Even though my server is managed and I could easily get them to fix it for me, every little bit that I can learn helps my clients out too. I guess it’s what I call my “Continuing Education”.

    Have a great night!

Thanks for mentioning my e-book Kelly. :) It was written for the complete novice, and yes, even has a section on asking support to enable wildcard hosts. ;) Some people just do not know what to ask for, or how, or even if they should.

A lot fo people like to have a reference guide broken down into tiny steps with loads of screenshots to make sure it’s done right – even if it takes them more than five minutes. ;)

One of the *biggest* obstacles in getting BP working is making sure WPMU is installed correctly and working. This document helps with that.
