BuddyPress 1.0 Has Arrived
April 30, 2009 in News
I’m happy to announce that version 1.0 of BuddyPress is now available for download.
This release marks over a year of solid development, starting from the roots of the ChickSpeak project, all the way to the blossoming developer community I see interacting on this site everyday.
This is just the first step on a long road ahead. So much is possible now that we have a solid WordPress-based social framework to build upon.
The status updates and gallery components are next on the roadmap, you can expect to see versions of those components appearing later this year. We’ll also be going through the hundreds of enhancement tickets we’ve received, and with your help prioritizing them for future versions.
I’m most excited to see what plugin developers and theme designers can come up with. Even in the pre-release stages, plugins to extend and add functionality have already been popping up. If you’re a plugin developer or theme designer, be sure to check out the skeleton component and skeleton theme. These packages will provide you with a solid starting point to build BuddyPress components and custom themes from.
I’d also like to give some serious thanks to the community that has rallied around this project. I was told that getting people excited and involved with a new OSS project can be one of the hardest tasks to accomplish. I’m really bowled over that so many people have become involved with BuddyPress development and feedback on a daily basis.
I’d like to give a mention to every developer who has helped with the project, whether it be with tickets, advice, feedback or support:

After reading the comment of Adelip above for photo albums, maybe you can just add a feature to add your logins and passwords for Flickr, Picasa and Photobucket and others. Use their APIs or something like that or even just enter the username and pull the images from their RSS feeds. but an API of some sort would be ideal so photo comments also update the comments on Flickr, Picasa, etc wherever it came from. Then tie up with CoolIris Firefox plugin for that image effect gallery thing.

@BenjArriola – Take a look at http://bp-dev.org – as nicolagreco has created a YouTube and a Flickr component for BuddyPress.

Talk about finding the customer pain and solving their problem….I have been killing myself over the past two weeks trying to learn how to create this functionality in Drupal. You folks may have saved the day!

Congrats on the BuddyPress 1.0 release!
Just wondering when we can expect a release for WordPress Standard and not MU.
I’ve read on the forums that this is going to come “soon”.
Just wondering when “soon” is going to be

BuddyPress looks like a great and well executed idea. Props guys. We work with WordPress here in Brazil and we will give it a serious look at BP. Keep up the good work.

I wish it were possible to use WordPress (not only the MU), because I don’t interested migrating to the MU (I have only 1 blog) but I would like to add that feature social networking.
There are estimates of when the BuddyPress will be available for WordPress (traditional)? And also, to enable integration with bbPress (forum). It would be perfect!
Congratulations for open source projects.

Would it be better to use BuddyPress on a new blog, or add it to an existing one? I am always interested in keeping up on what is new in the blogging world. I have read about BP (is it ok to call it that?) for a few months now, but have not used it yet.
I thought I would let the better coder and fixer types do that first.

I’ve been watching the BuddyPress development for some time and I really like what I see. I see a huge market for this for niche sites and the power to own your data is key!
I can’t wait for the gallery component to be completed. I have thought about using BuddyPress for several client project, but the lack of the gallery right now prevents me from doing so.
BuddyPress is such an awesome addition to an already awesome platform. Keep up the great work!

I bet BuddyPress would work great if someone was trying to set up a social network for their specific city (city departments, restaurants, businesses, and local people could set up profiles with a more local focus).

The WordPress phenomenom just keeps on growing and getting more and more versatile with people developing the most awesome apps & plugins. BuddyPress takes this the next level and I’m very excited by the potential here, rather than trying to develop something from scratch.
Are there any examples that we can view where BuddyPress has been used? I am most interested to see how end users have implemented it!
