Is there a way whereby I can specify text string somewhat different to default? e.g. If I want to rename “Groups” as “Clubs” in my community.
Ideally a solution would be such that would not “break” when I update Buddypress to new version(s).

?
Thanks! These links are truly very helpful for me.
I thought about changing language files, but my fear is that when BP is updated, these files will be overwritten. Is this not the case?
You need to create a child theme of the bp-default theme. http://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
Then follow the instructions here http://codex.buddypress.org/extending-buddypress/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/ as @aces mentioned above
Thanks! Will try
