I’ve managed to answer my own question. It’s necessary to add define(‘BP_USE_WP_ADMIN_BAR’, true); to wp-config.php.

Paul, I have installed the plugin and the javascript function triggers okay when ’@’ is entered but it’s not finding the name being typed. I will keep persevering and see what’s going on.It’s a really neat plugin, so I’d like to give you some more solid feedback when I’ve explored further.
