How to get users to post blogs

I have wordpress 3.0 and buddypress 1.2.4. I would like to add a tab to my menu called blogs so my users can write and post blogs. How do I do this? I can create a page and call it blogs but it shows up empty and there is no way for users to write or post anything. Thanks.

  • slightly confused by the request. WP 3.0 has the capability to allow user blogs as either sub domains or directories, would that achieve your request? failing that you can always set users as ‘Authors’ on the main blog which would allow them to create posts. Simply creating a page and naming it what you like will do nothing as that is simply a ‘Page’ on the main blog and requires content added via the dashboard when you create that page or content/scripting added directly to a file named as that page and set as a template.

Now you have me confused :). I used to have a ning website and my members had a tab called blogs where they could write and post blogs. I would like for my members to be able to do this on my website http://www.vapersplace.com As of now they can post recent activity, create and post on forums, create groups and create profiles. I would like to have the create blogs function back for them.

I’ll try and word it better. I would like for my users to be able to write and post blogs. On my old ning website http://vapersplace.ning.com/profiles/blog/list users were able to write blogs and I don’t have this function on my current website http://www.vapersplace.com Is there a way I can have this function back for them?

Yeah wouldn’t hope to replicate all Nings features on BudyyPress. Default core BP doesn’t have blogs in the Ning sense, but iirc there is a plugin that creates a group blog, have a hunt through the plugins listings.

That’s what I mentioned in my first response, but seemed to cause confusion. Ning and BP have a slightly different approach, Ning blogs are not – in some senses – real blogs whereas what WP 3.0 MS offers are actual WP blogs for your registered users.

I had the same question as Kevin – how can users create their own blogs? from the showcase sites especially the one on EcoLiving here http://helloecoliving.com/hello-eco-living-blogs/ they have the option Create your own blog. so I thought it was part of BuddyPress but I guess not.

Exactly MW. That’s what I want on my website. I guess I have to enable multi-site within wordpress in order to do that. I will try it and let you know if it works. I just hope it doesn’t screw anything up on my website. When I uploaded wordpress 3.0 and buddypress 1.2.4 it caused some damage to my website which took me 4 days to fix.

Ning defines blogs differently than how we at WordPress/BuddyPress do. A Ning site member can click on a link “Blog” and Ning’s post panel. You can try using Jet QuickPress – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/jet-quickpress/ which adds “a “Quickpress” submenu you can find in bp admin bar > My Accounts > Blogs > QuickPress from which you can easily add a post to any of your blogs

Just a thought: the plugin, in effect, can render a Multi-Author BP site without adding subsites and without allowing access to the dashboard because members can post from the front and click on categories and add tags there as well. Then, one can create a customized member profile page to have that link to blog posting and then render the latest posts of each individual member .

@kevin and @ MW, That’s exactly what i want to do too. i’ve installed WP 3.0 with multisite enabled and the last version of buddypress, everything is ok except i don’t know how to allow any user to create a blog. How can we do that? Can anyone tell us? Thanks!!

So camilin119, you have wpmu enabled already and you still can’t allow users to create blogs? I don’t want to wpmu enable if it doesn’t work.

I have enabled wpmu. The positive- I now have blogs :) The negative- I lost all of my users uploaded avatars, group avatars and when you click on blog it goes to the home page :(

I too would like to move all my users and their blog posts to wordpress. Is this even possible, to move the blog content too?

@queertoday – what application are you moving from? You might want to see this page https://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_Content
