Any successful Buddypress site?

  • @rkord

    Member

I am asking a very basic question here, but would like to see if there are any successful communities created using Buddypress?

Have you guys seen any serious community built using Buddypress? Most of the ‘featured’ sites in Buddypress site have no serious participation (except for maybe educational sites, but those are more professors driven and less by choice).

Would love to see some real social network coming from Buddypress and inspiration one can derive from these.

And what would be your definition of a “real social network”?

I’m not really seeing a buddypress driven site become as big as facebook or twitter w/o some serious original ideas etc.
Seeing that BuddyPress can be setup by anyone.

We are very successful and only 6 months in evolution at 1,200 members with a 70% active participant number (at least once every 2 weeks). The site is specifically for Music Education. You can check it out at musicpln[dot]org You’ll have to sign up to see it though (free sign-up).

    Regards.

Compared to what facebook? Nobody will ever reach what facebook has achieved. And really who would want to? I have a few close friends on FB but could careless what the other users are doing. BuddyPress is more to create groups of interest. That’s it’s power over FB. Also you can control the experience, FB is generic.

I don’t know about that, I think someone will pass FB up, not sure when, but they’ll get some competition that’ll have them shaking in their boots lol

    I hope its me :)

Hey @Andrea_r lol, i remember when you helped me with my first line of BP code….I’ve gotten better, thank you :)

Yay! And I thought we’re doing really bad. 2k+ members in 4 months but this is is like highly customized buddypress site. http://www.webcuties.me. No major marketing yet but will run contests with prizes soon and hopefully that would give us a boost.

@mjbenzon is that theme available anywhere? I would love to use that.

    @mjbenzon

@igny no not yet, the theme is still a little buggy, hard to make it work flawless if you costumize it that heavily, will let you know if I release the theme.

@mjbenzon I am willing to spend my own money in continuing the development of it if you guys would be willing to share it. I can also sign any agreement that I would not step in your niche. I would like to use it for my ethnicity as a casual dating site.

We’re only a new BuddyPress installation though the site has been going for about 4 years – http://www.geekandjock.com

My challenge is getting participation as well as expanding the community’s existence in the big wide wonderful world.

For me, any suggestions in getting the word out would be really appreciated.
What do others do for this? Maybe this would make a better topic elsewhere

Are you using WordPress SEO plugin in conjuction with this fix from BuddyDev:

Making WordPress SEO plugin compatible with BuddyPress

It also helps having links to your site from other popular social networks as well as linking back. I am not an expert on SEO I just know what worked for me in the past.

@bp-help yeah, I am running WordPress SEO by Yoast as well as one mod but will need to check the one you listed and suss it out.
The site has social sharing coming out of the kazoo. So I still haven’t found whatever it is that people find attractive in a Community such as the one I’m trying to get going and build up.

@bphelp Checked out the buddydev.com thread and gave him 2 other WordPress threads relating to WPSEO and BP so hope he can make his stuff (and BP) even better.
Back to pondering on my fledgling community ….. 🙂
