The buddypress admin menu is translated as are the main tabs, ‘Componentes’ page content is translated but ‘Configurações’ page content is still in english.
The parts that aren’t buddypress aren’t translated for me, as I don’t have the main wordpress and theme or plugin language files installed

I used:
buddypress-pt_BR.po
buddypress-pt_BR.moand:
`define (‘WPLANG’, ‘pt_BR’);`
then it worked for me ( although the actual buddypress translation is not complete ) …..

Following the same procedure with the pt_PT files does change some of the language whearas the pt_BR file doesn’t seem to change anything….
I don’t know where the fault is. It seems that the place you downloaded from might only be the bp 1.2.* version. but it’s not clear….

There is no Portugal Portugese in https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/translations/ and the Brazilian Portugese link goes to non relevant advertising in Japanese….
If it doesn’t already exist you need to create a languages folder under wp-content – http://www.example.com/wp-content/languages/

WordPress stores language in wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-languages/buddypress.pot
Friend, and variations (including plurals), appear many, many times…..
PoEdit is free software designed to make editing language files easier….

There are snippets of code circulating on this forum which can lock down buddypress in a similar way.

Are you sure the plugin is compatible with bp 1.5.
Buddypress private community fails in https://codex.buddypress.org/releases/1-5-plugin-compatibility/ and https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/private-buddypress/ isn’t even mentioned…

If I type /activate at the end of the domain, which on my site gives me the activation page, on your site, it redirects back to wordpress login – hence my question about ‘privacy’ plugins or code. That could be overridding it?

Where did you get that list. I haven’t seen some of them before and others repeat default settings

ie: to redefine the slug you would need something like

Buddypress does not work properly with the ‘Default’ so select something different.
Save Changes.
If wordpress can’t write to the .htaccess file, it should tell you what you need to manually copy and paste.
The main .htaccess file is normally in the top level of the directory where the wp-config.php file should also be…. In some file systems it may be hidden…
mod_rewrite must be enabled on your server for pretty permalinks to work.
