Hi ya,
hmmm… What do you mean by disposable email? The receiving email address? Or the sending one?

The Sending one is from our server, which is owned by us.

Problem solved. The reason Public Message was redirecting me to a 404 error is because I did not have Activity Stream set up. At first I did not want it but now its best to keep it.

my best suggestion is to try and reinstall WordPress and BuddyPress & bbPress manually via ftp.
If that doesn’t work, you’re best bet is to reinstall the most recent versions of those (before the upgrade of course) and then upload your most recent .sql backup via phpmyadmin to restore your site pre-upgrade.

Really? Is this still the case with the new versions of buddypress?

I thought that allowing avatar uploads in open registration installs was the default.

If that is still risky, which solutions would you recomment, @mercime ?
