In reply to: BP 1.2 : problem with bp_profile_group_has_fields()
Can you post this in a ticket please?
Just to clarify – you should not be moving any themes from the BuddyPress directory. From WordPress 2.9 onwards the themes will be automatically detected in the BuddyPress plugin folder. You can simply create a new child theme in wp-content/themes and it will automatically know that the parent is in the BuddyPress plugin folder.
Mike: Not sure why you want to remove the custom header functions? They simply provide a UI to uploading a custom header image in Appearance > Custom Header.
In reply to: Recent Activities on private groupThis may have been a bug in 1.1, but it’s definitely fixed in trunk/1.2.
Famous last words.... the internet never forgets
The new bp-default is brand new theme with much easier to handle templates, better CSS and simpler JS. Overall it is a big improvement on the original bp-sn-parent/bp-default combination.
From 1.2 onwards I would recommend using the bp-default as a parent theme.
It’s quite simple, create a new theme folder in wp-content/themes, create a style.css file and add a:
Template: bp-defaultto the header of the style.css file. You can then pull in the existing bp-default CSS if you want to use that:
@import url( ../plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/style.css );Then under that line you can begin to make your CSS adjustments. If you want to edit a template file, copy it from bp-default and then paste it into your theme folder.
That’s really all there is to it. If you do it this way then your theme will get updated when BuddyPress is updated.
If it offers any comfort, the days of radical template changes in every version are over.
In reply to: bp_is_group_admin_page() function??They are all in core since it would be quite annoying to have to do if ( function_exists() … every time you wanted to use one.
In reply to: Major performance issue when viewing the InboxI may have fixed this with some updates I made to the messages component today.
In reply to: Site Wide Activity stream not workingHmm, if we can get all this in trac and I’ll see if I can get it fixed, strange. Thanks for the debugging info andrea_r very useful.
In reply to: Buddypress 1.2 and WPIf you want your users to be able to create a blog and have it be tracked then use MU, otherwise use WP. There is no difference other than that.
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2Some really nice points guys. I think there is some way to go to perfect how this will work.
I’m not worried about the current implementation since it very very simple. It’s just a filter on the content that is posted to look for @mentions. It’s not storing anything and the @ notation only acts as way to *notify* a user, it is not “sending” them a message in reality, so it doesn’t need to store a reference. It’s not like Twitter where it has to store a chain of @messages that all relate to one another since you can directly reply to the message with a comment. When you do that then a reference is stored.
I do love the simplicity though. It’s just a text box, no messing with extra boxes for tags, who it’s to, etc, etc. No UI bloat, I think that’s a beautiful thing.
In reply to: Site Wide Activity stream not workingAll true, however bp_core_time_since() runs gmdate() on both time values, converting them to GMT regardless of the time zone.
In reply to: Need AJAX helpjust replace .livequery() with .live() since this is now built into jQuery.
In reply to: Major performance issue when viewing the InboxCreate a defect ticket please.
In reply to: Child Theme : Adding jquery plugin to my child themejust use:
<?php locate_template( array( 'somefile.php' ), true ) ?>Then you don’t have to worry about templatepath or stylesheetpath.
In reply to: BuddyPress screencasts – what do you want to see?I think the most popular screencasts are going to be:
1. What BuddyPress is, and what it can do.
2. How to set up BuddyPress from scratch.
In reply to: Recent Activities on private groupThey do.
In reply to: BP 1.2 : \”bp_filter_request is not defined\”I’m off to bed but will look at this in the morning, can you open a ticket please?
In reply to: Three ColumnsYep, you will need to learn HTML and CSS and create a child theme.
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2Mike – this is a bug in Safari, if you use any other browser the cursor will be in the correct position.
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2Probably though autocomplete, or accepting display names somehow.
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2One last post! Perhaps the terminology is confusing people.
When I @message someone in an update, I’m not really sending them a message. What I’m doing is saying “Hey! Come and read this and reply!”.
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2Also, try it on testbp.org – it has been working really well and I receive @messages all the time, each with an active reply stream.
This is never going to work like a message posting wall, it’s simply not how an activity stream works. If that’s what you want/need then stick with the old wire. Please give this new functionality a chance though, it works quite well if you take time to use it in an active environment.
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2I can understand the confusion with usernames and display names. This will be addressed, but not at the expense of not having this for 1.2.
I think there is still a lot of confusion around this, and where exactly messages end up when they are posted. I’ll try and clear it up.
Your activity stream displays your activity, everything you have done on the site. When I post a message, this is my activity, regardless of who it is aimed at. This is why @messages that you send display on your activity stream. You posted it, it’s your activity. The stream is not a wall, or status update history.
When you post an @message, the user you have mentioned will get an email notification of your activity with a link to take a look at it. They will come to your profile and read the message.
The user can reply to the message right there and then on your profile. You can have a complete discussion without having to @message each other or keep switching back and forth between profiles. Each time a reply is posted, this is activity for that particular user, which means any replies posted will appear on that user’s activity stream with a link back to the original thread.
It’s quite simple really, but you have to stop thinking about it in terms of how Facebook and Twitter work. It’s an activity stream with direct comments, not a wall or status update stream. Why would someone else’s activity display on your activity stream?
