In reply to: bp-forum attachment error in BP 1.2.5
Woo hoo! Quite possible that that’s a bug in the original plugin (though I’m not sure how it snuck through)
In reply to: bp-forum attachment error in BP 1.2.5@LPH2005 – It looks like the plugin is trying to create the table. I don’t think it should be doing that every time you load. I will have a closer look when I get a chance and see if I can reproduce.

In reply to: BuddyPress Dev Chat –@jeffsayre – Hooray for great minds thinking alike! Boo that I posted my suggestions on this thread instead of in the right place!
In reply to: BuddyPress Dev Chat –I might be a few minutes late to the meeting, due to a pizza-related appointment.
Can I nominate a sort of broad topic? Feature scope for BP 1.3: has it been set definitively? xprofile changes, revised installation/dashboard, integration with WP pages – are there other big ones? Other than testing trunk and bug hunting, are there other specific ways that community members like myself can help with particular components for BP 1.3?
Related: the idea was once floated of organizing mini dev teams around different components. Still on the table?
In reply to: Forum rss feed brokenYes. https://buddypress.org/support/topics/feed/ should lead to topics (?) but gives the whole activity feed.
In reply to: How to filter extended profiles fields editings?Actually, it is possible to do this kind of verification. There’s just no UI for it.
Look in buddypress/bp-xprofile/bp-xprofile-classes.php, method BP_XProfile_ProfileData::save(). There is an action hook ‘xprofile_data_before_save’ that happens (you guessed it) before the save. You could hook a custom filtering function to this action and validate your data that way.
Thanks for the documentation, JJJ. Maybe this could be a new page on the Codex?
In reply to: Screwed up Group – please help!!Hm, it’s not clear to me off the top of my head how either the Group Email Subscription plugin or Group Management could cause the problem you describe. From the looks of it, bp_has_groups() was taking the wrong scope (pulling up all groups from the installation, rather than just the current group), which suggests that something weird was happening when the $bp global was set up. Not sure what that might have been, though, and what it might have had to do with the group member issue you describe.
If you come across the problem again (either with BP Group Management and GES activated or not), please post as many details as you can. I’d be curious to know what went wrong.
In reply to: profile managementHow are your users getting to the Dashboard in the first place? They should be able to manage their profiles by going to My Profile -> Edit.
In reply to: Missing admin bar menu itemsThe Wire feature was deprecated with BuddyPress version 1.2. If you’d like to use the Wire, try installing the BuddyPress Backward Compatibility plugin and activating the wire feature: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-backwards-compatibility/
The functionality of the wire – namely, the ability to leave short messages for other users – has mainly been replaced by the @-mention feature.
If you want users to have their own individual blogs, you’ll have to activate WP Network mode. If you want them to be able to post on your main BuddyPress blog, they’ll have to be at least Contributors. If you just want them to be able to post messages for others to see, then perhaps the status update feature will be enough.
In reply to: All blogs not showing up in blogs directoryThe “not viewable to search engines” is probably causing the problem. Try switching it to public and see if it solves the problem.
In reply to: custom plugin : hook bp_setup_globals is not firedHave you tried @jeffsayre‘s Hook Sniffer to see if your hooks aren’t being recognized in the right order? Last time I had a problem like this, Hook Sniffer solved it in five minutes. https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-hook-sniffer/
You got it!
If you want to get content from different blogs on a WPMU/WPMS installation on a single BuddyPress page, you’ll probably have to use the function switch_to_blog(), and its partner restore_current_blog(). For example, if you run switch_to_blog(5) from your BP blog (I’m assuming it’s blog #1), any blog-specific functions you run (such as query_posts) will be with reference to blog 5 instead of blog 1. Use restore_current_blog() to switch back to blog 1.
This method is pretty resource intensive, though, so it might not be the best choice if you’ve got a huge site.
Try putting this in your plugins/bp-custom.php file:
function remove_blogs_nav_for_zero() {
global $bp;if ( bp_blogs_total_blogs_for_user() == 0 )
bp_core_remove_nav_item( $bp->blogs->slug );
}
add_action( 'bp_setup_nav', 'remove_blogs_nav_for_zero', 11 );
In reply to: Private Group Permalink Redirects to Home Page@themightymo The template file that handles this is bp-default/groups/single/home.php. See around line 44 – bp_group_status_message() creates the “to join this group…” message for private groups. If you want to customize the way that you are redirected, you should start here.
It’s strange, though – BP 1.2.4.1 should do what you are suggesting out of the box. Could there be a plugin conflict? Or an issue with a custom theme that you’ve built?
In reply to: Importing data from Excel, CSV sheet@wordpresschina – Thanks so much for your work on this, and especially for sharing your work on the forum. Very glad you were able to make it (mostly) work.
When I built the plugin, I didn’t make any effort to differentiate between different kinds of profile fields (checkboxes vs radio buttons vs text boxes etc). It’s impossible to get this info merely from the Ning export (at least, the old style CSV export), so it would require prompting the importing admin for each new field. Not impossible, but it required a lot of coding that I didn’t want to do because I wanted to get the dang thing out there so people could use it

I’m hopeful that the upcoming Ning network exporter will produce more robust data that will allow easier, and more fine grained, imports into BP.
Whether that can be expanded to more general CSV imports will always be a tricky issue. Ideally, an importer would be designed to handle a generic import format, so that importers for new formats would only have to convert to this standard format – all the BP-specific stuff would be done with the all-purpose importer. I’m afraid I don’t have the funding to build such a plugin right now, but it will definitely be crucial to the growth of BP as a platform in the months and years to come.
What you’re describing is the expected behavior of BP/WPMU. BP is designed to work on a single blog in a WP installation. Additional blogs are more or less totally independent (“more or less” because BP still tracks activity that happens on those blogs).
You might be able to do what you’re trying to do with a plugin like https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wpmu-new-blog-defaults/, which lets site/super admins determine defaults on new blogs. You could set your home theme as the default.
If you want to offer child themes, you’ll have to build them. Make them children of your BuddyDress theme, make them available through Site Admin > Themes, and then your users will be able to select them.
In reply to: Importing Ning Forums to BBPressOr you could use the free version I built. Again, just for users and profiles. http://teleogistic.net/code/wordpresswordpress-mu/import-from-ning/
In reply to: Importing Ning Forums to BBPressImporting into BP wouldn’t be too hard in theory, but unfortunately Ning doesn’t give you an easy way to get your forum content out. If you can figure out a way to get it out in one piece, let me know and I’ll work on an importer – that would have a lot of value to the community.
In reply to: Performance of BuddyPress on WP versus WPMU@techguy There are a couple of considerations.
First, @travel-junkie is right that you don’t have to do too much to switch MS on in WP 3.0. However, once you’ve switched to MS you can’t go back.
Second, WPMU(MS) performance is really just a function of how many blogs you’ve got. If you install MS and still only run a single blog, resource usage will be practically identical to a single-WP setup. As you increase the number of blogs (and, by extension, the number of db read/writes), required resources will increase in a way that is a little bit steeper than linear. In other words, going from one blog to five blogs (each with the same amount of traffic and activity as the one blog) will require just over five times the memory (the “just over” is because of inefficiencies introduced when you start to get a lot of blog tables in the database).
I don’t have a lot of numbers to back me up (i’m a noob), but at least in terms of DB hits and memory usage (typical bottlenecks for a WP installation, I think), adding BP is more resource intensive than adding a couple of extra blogs. Think of all the dynamic stuff that gets loaded with every BP page load. Plus I would wager that introducing BP means many more page loads per visit, given the nature of the content.
I’d love to see someone with some serious sysadmin chops do a real study of BP performance, so that people will have a nice basis for decision making when looking at potential hosts.
In reply to: custom bp-language configuration not workingGlad you figured it out – and good tip about the existing vs new activity. Activity action strings (x posted a new y) are saved in the db rather than generated on the fly, so they won’t be changed by a language file if they already exist.
@paulhastings0 Yeah, you could definitely do that. It might take a bit of tooling to make sure that items from a given feed are matched with the correct user in your BP installation. But it has the potential to allow users to create content anywhere and pull it into your community, in a facebookish sort of way.
In reply to: How to remove those brackets ?IMHO, murder is a sin. This is a little further down the scale.
Use a custom language file to get rid of these numbers in parentheses. https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/ Look for entries like
Groups <span>(%d)</span>and replace them withGroups. Eventually it would be nice to get this markup out of the core and into a template file, but in the meantime this will do the trick just fine.
