    If you have over 100,000 users you’ll need a very good server setup. Lots of RAM and ideally an SSD as BuddyPress writes to the server a lot. You can’t just cache BP pages for logged in users as they will see old content, so you need to be able to handle a lot of database queries all at once. Also set up a CDN and put all assets (images, CSS, JS, etc) there to reduce the load on your server. And minify them all too.

    I suspect you’ll need to set up some custom caching for certain parts of the site so they don’t bog down, particularly search. If you do a search of 100,000+ users, especially a search with multiple terms, it will take a while to run through all of those database entries. You can set up a cached index of all search results and just update it at intervals with a cron job, and then your search results will be much faster. Same with group search if necessary. This would have to be custom. What I’m describing is exactly how we set up search here: http://easyoutsource.com/workers. It will search through over 25,000 users with multiple parameters pretty fast. Prior to caching search results it was almost too slow to use.

    Very cool.

    One suggestion – the homepage doesn’t reveal that it’s a BuddyPress theme or even a theme at all. I don’t think that is obvious to a new visitor to the site just yet.

    I’ve never seen that before. Standard advice is to switch themes and deactivate all plugins, then switch everything back one by one to see if a specific theme/plugin is the cause.

    If not, BuddyPress does automatically inject links into some content. Profile fields for example, when viewing a user’s profile. Weird that it’s doing this on a random WP page though.

    As for ‘network activated’ I suggest leaving it to just ‘activated’ on your main site that you’re running BP on. No reason to run it everywhere.

    I can deactivate all plugins and then reactivate, but Iโ€™m new to WP and not sure if doing so would re-set all of the settings for each plugin.

    It shouldn’t, assuming your plugins are well coded. The vast majority of the time doing this causes no problems. But you don’t know 100% until you try it.

    You might want to back up your database first just to have a copy to revert back to. It’s a good policy to do that anyways. I use: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-dbmanager/
    You can set it to do daily or weekly backups to your server of your database. Pretty sweet.

    As for your theme, that theme (Solitudo) looks like it has a ton of theme options. I’m guessing some PHP customization in there is breaking BuddyPress output. You may have to just dig in and deactivate/reactivate parts of the theme (at the code level) until you get things to work if you feel comfortable doing that. Specifically the functions, or functions in PHP files that are possibly called by the core functions.php file – I haven’t used that theme myself so not sure how it’s set up. Every theme is different so there isn’t some quick answer unfortunately.

    Hope that helps.

    Yeah, it’s going to run everything through Gravatar and serve your custom avatar via the Gravatar URL.

    Probably a JS conflict on your site. buddypress.js has some code that expands that textarea when you click into it, which works in Chrome/FF out of the box normally. I imagine a theme or plugin is in conflict. Some plugins do interact with the post box using JS.

    Try deactivating all other plugins, then activate BuddyPress on its own. See if that solves it. If so, it’s a plugin conflict. Then you can reactivate all other plugins one by one until it breaks again, and then you’ll know which one is the culprit.

    If deactivating all other plugins doesn’t solve it, then try switching themes to see if that’s the cause.

    If you don’t mind having the pic loading at its current size but just appearing smaller, you can set its width and height via CSS in your theme/child theme’s stylesheet and the CSS will override the outputted size.

    You can use a plugin like s2Member: http://www.s2member.com/

    Not as clean as hard-coding it, but this can potentially solve your problem. You could use it to redirect users off of profiles you don’t want them to see.

    Otherwise you’ll need to hard code it using a combo of IF statements.

    // Check if user is logged in
    if ( is_user_logged_in() )

    // Check if user is on his/her own profile while logged in
    if ( bp_is_my_profile() )

    @betson Are you also using the BuddyBoss theme like JeffE, or another theme? If so, please update to a recent version of the theme and it’ll fix it immediately. If not, contact your theme author. We had this issue by previously making edits to /members/single/home.php. BP 1.9 added a call in there for the Notifications page, and since we had previously edited that template (overrode it within our theme) it caused the Notifications page to go blank. If you’re using another theme they possibly had the same issue, so possibly it’s the same solution.

    This is the line that fixed it:

    elseif ( function_exists('bp_is_user_notifications')
    && bp_is_user_notifications() ) :
    bp_get_template_part( 'members/single/notifications' );

    That goes with all of the other template calls in the “item-body” div.

    Thanks. I am assuming you are referring to the space here:

    https://www.evernote.com/shard/s200/sh/a3ea0b2c-1df2-4c7e-9153-dd8fe3c82e13/78de3a53c337fd1ddf6b2c6d1ece4b9d/deep/0/Members-Directory–.png

    That space is coming from this CSS defined in /wp-content/themes/PowerMag/css/less.css

    h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 {
    margin: 10px 0;
    font-family: inherit;
    font-weight: normal;
    line-height: 20px;
    color: inherit;
    text-rendering: optimizelegibility;
    font-family: ‘BebasNeueRegular’, sans-serif;
    }

    You would want to remove that margin at the top. Not sure what your CSS level is so forgive me if I’m telling you what you already know. When you see 2 parameters in a row like that (margin section) the first parameter is top/bottom, and the second parameter is right/left. So this is applying a margin of 10px to the top and bottom of your headings, and 0 pixels to the right/left. You would want the top margin to be 0 and that will fix the issue. But don’t override this here or it will trickle down into all of your site headings. Isolate this box.

    This should work:

    .boxed-title {
    margin-top: 0;
    }

    .boxed-title is a class added to that specific h1.

    I canโ€™t seem to find the function name or php file in the buddypress directory.

    You can find the login widget code in /buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-widgets.php

    But mercime is correct, your best move is to add a widget area to your theme and then use the login widget (assuming you’re on BP 1.9+ which includes a login widget).

    @buddyboss

    Participant

    Yeah it looks like BP is not feeding into the correct templates. By default it should feed into page.php in your theme, but it looks like it’s feeding into a blog post template.

    @buddyboss

    Participant

    Can you post the URL? It would make it a lot easier as then we could inspect the CSS and give you the solution.

    Hey there, I’m the author of BuddyBoss. This is not the default behavior in the theme. Have you updated to the latest version? 3.0.6 put out a patch for notifications before BuddyPress 1.9 came out, and I have a feeling you’re using a version prior to that as that could cause a blank page without the patch. If you still have issues after updating head over to our support forums and TJ will happily help you out.

    @buddyboss

    On the Members page it is outputting the BP member loop (member names, recent activity timestamp, etc) and pagination and all of the other BP member content all into a single paragraph. It appears that the_content is stripping out all of the BP HTML and just displaying the raw data. I’d look into the theme’s content loop, and then also look into the related functions (functions.php most likely).

    @buddyboss

    Participant

    Took a look at your site. It looks nice. But I do see that all the BP pages are not outputting any content. It’s all blank. Even the “By” line is empty, where I assume it would show the page author.

    When you are in your buddypress.php file is it including another inner template file to display content? If so, have you tried deleting all of that and just putting in <?php the_content();?> in the loop of buddypress.php? I’m wondering if this theme has some fancy default content loop that is filtering out BP stuff.

    @buddyboss

    @mercime thanks for posting the link. Good stuff. My suggestion is based on the assumption that most WP themes do not have these solutions in them as most sites are not using tables. BuddyPress is feeding its content into theoretically any WP theme and most themes are (or will be) responsive and most web traffic is (or will be) mobile. So if BP is feeding in content that is not going to work for a large percent of users it seems like something worth at least considering to change, even if there are some tradeoffs.

    Anyways, I’m sorry as I didn’t mean to hijack this thread with these table discussions. We’re a bit off topic now ๐Ÿ™‚

    @buddyboss

    Participant

    @hnla haha fair enough ๐Ÿ™‚

    But… it’s also an inevitability that tables get removed from layouts as most web traffic moves to mobile and tables with a lot of columns don’t work on mobile. Might as well just accept that and implement it now.

    @buddyboss

    Participant

    @henrywright thanks for that function. Should be helpful

    @buddyboss

    Participant

    A relatively simple suggestion for 2.0 – Get rid of tables in all templates so developers can style everything for mobile without having to override templates to convert tables to lists. Notifications and Messages use tables right now and they don’t have to.

    A harder feature BP could really use is admin editable fields for groups. Basically the exact same thing as xprofile fields but for groups. This is the kind of thing that makes more sense in core than a plugin.
