    Are both ImageMagick and GD2 both installed on your servers? The gurus over at the mu forums say that both have to be installed.

    I’m not sure what rev bp you are running but in r809 anyplace you see one of the ‘add friend’ buttons for a member it goes nowhere. That’s a good nowhere though. Clicking the ‘add friend’ button makes an ajax call to the server with out moving from the page. You get some pretty flashing lights and the button transforms to ‘friendship requested’.

    Easy? You mean like going to McDonalds and getting a cheeseburger easy?

    Or going to the store buying all the fixings, coming home and making a cheeseburger easy?

    Line 34 of bp-activity-widgets.php is the spot that echos the sitewide activity stuff you see. The loop around it uses the var $item which is of the flavor ‘array’ containing amongst other things the condiment : $item. If you use the proper kitchen utensil : bp_core_get_avatar( $item, 1 ) you are well on your way to making a normal size burger. That gets you the 50×50 avatar.

    If your really hungry you could use bp_core_get_avatar( $item, 2 ). That gets you the big avatar.

    So, is it McDonalds today or the kitchen?

    I think Charlie Stout’s talk about farming in relation to bp has made me hungry.

    You are not running mu 2.6.x then. That was introduced then+

    When it comes to flavors of hosts, installs and configurations vanilla is good. Anything other than vanilla is only good in the ice cream world. subdomains are vanilla.

    They get gone but you get an error msg no matter what it seems. Hmmm. OK, back to the code to find out why.

    Well, I tried deleting wire posts in the profile, r809, on two different servers. windows and linux. No problems. If it’s deleting the posts then I can’t see how you are getting a spurious error msg. If bp successfully deletes the post it returns happy all the way up the chain, back to you and a happy message.

    Dunno. I’m stumpted.

    Ok, thanks for the explanation of ‘fred’. I still don’t understand but then I don’t have to. :)

    The error log you are looking at may or may not contain some info useful to you. That is an apache error log and sometimes php errors are sent to that log and sometimes not. Depends on how the server is setup.

    The lovely WSOD is probably some kind of php error you aren’t seeing. Check back in when your friend gets back.

    Howdy, the member directory relies on a function called get_active_users() in bp-core-classes.php. That relies on the mu usermeta table. mu tracks a ‘last_activity’ key/value pair for each user. How and when mu decides to update this, ya got me. The member directory doesn’t rely on bp produced info to decide who is ‘active’.

    It’s a bug in the latest mu r1589. The function remove_option_whitelist() in plugin.php is not checking to see if it’s going to reference a var that has been unset(). It is called by mu_options() in mu.php and in there it unsets() an element in the $options array.

    Why? I dunno but it does. Then it asks remove_option_whitelist() to get rid of something that doesn’t exist anymore. It should check for isset(), is_array() but it’s not.

    I posted it in the mu trac. Gotta wait til the fix floats thru svn.

    Thanks David. I thought it might be useful to let people know that the bp core and all the lovely components can be accessed from any theme, any time. It ain’t rocket science, it’s programming.

    I’m not too familiar with pastie. I’ve just used it a couple of times. It’s browsable? I just though it was a net wide scratch pad.

    Nicola! I posted the same stuff over at buddypressdev.org too.

    (Sorry to interrupt. Was lurking now intruding) What does your apache/php error log say. Anything interesting?

    I had some problems with groups recently. I had been fooling around in root and did something dumb. I screwed up the php session handling. I didn’t know it though. Everything was working just fine except one thing. Driving me crazy. It was only when I stopped and took a break that I looked at the error_log for a different reason. There was my answer.

    I was thinking about session problems but those were introduced in php 4.0.0. It’s the error logs that might tell you guys something.

    If bp isn’t creating tables, there is a reason for it.

    We’re with ya here plock. Gotta go look at the code and see why that error msg would happen. Hang in there.

    Back. Q? Is this your profile wire or a group wire? You said ‘my wire’ so I have to assume it’s your profile wire. Right? Going away again.

    Back. Q? Can you create new wire messages in your profile? There isn’t too much difference in the create and delete functions. There is an additional, new kinda security check in the delete function however. It might be getting confused.

    Do me a favor. Reload your home page. Start from scratch. From the adminbar go to ‘my account’ > wire (not .. > wire > all posts) and select that from the menu. Try to delete a wire post. Still getting the error?

    The only components that pay attention to the new security thing are wire and groups. If groups has a bug setting that security thingy (technical term) or somehow it’s not getting cleared and reset properly, then bp will think that you do not have permission to delete a wire post. It’ll then deliver that error msg.

    Try adding a new wire post and then deleting it. Give it a try please.

    Hi David. Well I’m glad you are running on a DV. It narrows the scope of the problems. On my host, when I setup a domain it creates a structure for me like this:

    /var/www/vhosts/mysitex.org/httpdocs

    /var/www/vhosts/mysitey.org/httpdocs

    Each has it’s own document root. I’m not a DV or linux guru but that sounds logical to me. I’m too new at multi-domain setups on a DV to tell you if this is normal host config behaviour or it’s just mine.

    Maybe Trent can give us some pointers on this. I know he has way more experience than me. Gotta go ask Trent for his guidance on this. I’ll be back.

    I was looking around for something similar. Not exactly what you are talking about though. I ran across:

    wp-o-matic which aggregates rss feeds to a blog

    http://devthought.com/wp-o-matic-the-wordpress-rss-agreggator/

    donncha’s site wide tags (which doesn’t work with bp at the moment)

    http://ocaoimh.ie/2008/10/01/wordpress-mu-sitewide-tags-pages-031/

    Any solution you find will probably not include your requirement for being selective about the posts you show. You are probably going to have to find something near what you want and modify it for your needs.

    Maybe somebody else has a different approach or suggestion?

    Hi wardeh. I was checking the ‘topics with no replies’ and saw you here. All by your lonesome self. How goes the battle this week?

    You don’t want to turn off groups but you just don’t want the option to create more groups to be available. Well, you want group creation to be a site admin thing only. Hmmm…

    I went and looked at the member theme code and finally arrived in the core code and lo and behold Andy was thinking of you! There is an unused option for the menu items. ‘site admin’ only. You’ll have to modify one line to turn off the group creation option for everyone except you.

    In the file /mu-plugins/bp-groups.php at line 205. This currently reads:

    bp_core_add_subnav_item( $bp, 'create', __('Create a Group', 'buddypress'), $groups_link, 'groups_screen_create_group', false, bp_is_home() );

    Change that line to read:

    bp_core_add_subnav_item( $bp, 'create', __('Create a Group', 'buddypress'), $groups_link, 'groups_screen_create_group', false, bp_is_home(), true );

    That change adds the ‘true’ parameter at the end which normally defaults to ‘false’. It’s the ‘site admin only’ sees this menu item flag.

    Merry Christmas. :)

    The famous ‘white screen of death’ means that you should look at your apache error logs. PHP is crashing with a syntax error or some other critical err. Find that and fix it and you should be able to login again.

    OK, I’ll bite. Who is ‘fred’? :)

    Howdy. I’m trying to figure out what the source of the problem is with your error msg. From what I can determine of your installation you have:

    1. mu installed on a shared host

    2. mu installed in a subdirectory under the document root called ‘exploreouroceans’

    3. mu is installed with the subdirectory option rather than the subdomain option

    So your comment about ‘nothing fancy’ and ‘vanilla install’ isn’t exactly right. :) A plain vanilla install is:

    1. mu installed on a dedicated virtual server

    2. mu installed in the document root

    3. mu installed and configured to use subdomains

    That is what works like a charm. Doing anything else seems to introduce complexities that are difficult to diagnose.

    Can you please confirm that this is actually how you have mu installed? It will help narrow down the problems you are experiencing.

    There is only an option to turn off the adminbar for logged out users. Yes/No for them. Otherwise it’s Yes for everywhere in mu. The adminbar gets generated at every page load in mu. You could disable it completely by default someplace in code and then in the pages that you want it to appear on, enable it before the wp_head() call that your theme makes in header.php

    bp registers its need for attention by the calls:

    add_action( ‘wp_footer’, ‘bp_core_admin_bar’ );

    add_action( ‘wp_head’, ‘bp_core_add_css’ );

    You could un-register these calls someplace like functions.php in your theme to turn off the adminbar globally:

    remove_action( ‘wp_footer’, ‘bp_core_admin_bar’ );

    remove_action( ‘wp_head’, ‘bp_core_add_css’ );

    Then in your theme, on the specific pages you want to show the adminbar register the adminbar again before the call to wp_head():

    add_action( ‘wp_footer’, ‘bp_core_admin_bar’ );

    add_action( ‘wp_head’, ‘bp_core_add_css’ );

    In your theme you’ll have to add some logic in header.php to detect what page is being displayed and make the event registration calls.

    So, in functions.php un-register the calls and in header.php before wp_head() re-register them. They’ll get turned off again when functions.php loads the next time and the sequence starts again.

    This sounds like an mu problem zanzoon. bp doesn’t have much to do with the backend of mu. Have you searched the mu forums? https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/

    Have you googled for that error msg with ‘wordpress’ as one of the keys?

    Looks like you are trying to modify a setting in the options page of mu and it doesn’t like what you are doing. I can’t tell you why from the info you’ve given.

    nicola, I’ve been teaching you american slang in irc. This is your first lesson in sarcasm. I keep forgetting that english is your second language. Sorry. Trying to be funny and failing miserably.
