For anyone following this and hoping for an answer, I came across a similar discussion:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/surprising-avatar-behavior

Andy said, “The quickest option is to remove the /wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/avatars/ directory and let BuddyPress rebuild your avatars as people upload again.” Also, Andy recommended that you check your permissions.

I did both of the above. I removed the avatar folder which did remove the mixed-up avatars. However, BP still would not correctly display newly uploaded avatars. It said the file was uploaded correctly, I see the file in the avatar folder (both bpfull.jpg and jpthumb.jpg) but BP is still displaying those files as a broken link.

Still hoping and looking for a fix to this as more and more people are being affected by it.

Still having this error. I understand that avatars are no longer stored in the database, that they are now stored in the folder blogs.dir. That directory is now populated with all the old avatars, however, those avatars are still showing up in the wrong places within the website.

If I start with an empty blogs.dir folder, I end up with the problem copgarden has only, when I upload a new avatar, it says it is successful but only an X is displayed. I look in blogs.dir and, yes, the file was uploaded correctly.

    No idea.

copgarden, I think you are having a different issue. My profile avatars are being replaced with group avatars and I am NOT able to replace or delete them.

I’m having the same issues as markschafer. I have the AvenueK9 theme running correctly on BP 1.1 beta on a root install, but just as markschafer described on a BP 1.1 subdomain install. Maybe this means something?

Another detail, if it helps. My large avatar and thumbnail avatar are different, each coming from a different group that I have.

My large profile avatar is coming from:

    wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/avatars/2/1194984513646717809chat_icon_01svghi-2-groupavatar-full.jpg

And the smaller, thumbnail profile avatar is coming from:

    wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/avatars/2/467b8b4b877c1_fasting-4-18-groupavatar-thumb.jpg

It seems at least one other person is having this same problem ( https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/11-missing-avatars#post-24891 ) though there is no current solution. I’m very grateful for any suggestions.

I am having the same issue. WPMU 2.8.4, BP 1.1. I have BP in a subdomain but the above person does not; same issue, however. The only plugin running is BP. Default theme. The following links are working correctly:

    /blog

    /forums

The following links are NOT working:

    /members

    /groups

    /blogs

The links that are not working simply go to the main page. If I try a direct URL, to my inbox for example, I am redirected to the main page.

I think the setup is different and, with all new things, will take some time getting used to. For those that prefer it the old way, I’m sure you can still have the traditional looking bbpress forums just as it is here on buddypress.org. The new change is adding a feature, not taking any away.

An example can be found on John James Jacoby’s killer site, http://delsolownersclub.com/

Good question; I don’t know, I did it manually. Using Bluehost, I ran into a snag or two but the solutions are well documented within these forums.

DJPaul is correct. I’m on Bluehost and you have to make sure that, when you install WPMU, you choose the subdirectory option.

As to why you are getting 404 errors, that’s a different story.

Just looked in the database and found the table wp_bp_activity_sitewide and everything looks good there. Still not sure what the problem could be.

You’re right, Jeff, that seems to be the last option. Thankfully, this is on a test install. The part that makes me nervous is, what happens if this happens on my live site, too? Cleaning house wouldn’t be an option there. It’s a conundrum. If I discover anything I’ll certainly pass along the news.

Thank you, John, Paul, and Jeff, for giving me your time and help on this.

I upgraded to WPMU 2.7.1 using the automatic upgrade so I assume it is the new wp-config.php file. However, I looked in that file and did not see the additional line that you mentioned. I added the line myself, however, there is no change.

Yes, I did the Site Admin > Upgrade when updating everything. I did it again just now to make sure; no change.

Sorry, I misspoke! This particular install is running completely “normal”, from the root domain.

Just installed trunk 1401 and the problem persists. I feel like the answer is either right under my nose or far beyond anything I would understand. Either way, I’m clueless.

    Again, for the record:

    BP 1.0 RC 2, trunk 1401

    WPMU 2.7.1

Standard BP member theme at /wp-content/bp-themes/buddypress-member/

Standard BP home theme at /wp-content/themes/buddypress-home

    .htaccess is in the root

    No errors in log.

When going to the URL /members, /groups, /blogs, I get the message:

You do not have any BuddyPress themes installed.

Please move “/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/” to “/wp-content/bp-themes/” and refresh this page. You can download more themes here.

If it matters, I’m running WPMU in the subdirectory, not subdomain, way.

I think that’s all the information I know.

    @chriscarter

Yes, .htaccess is in the root of the install. I’m running the BP theme straight out of the box, no alterations.

I’m going to try upgrading to the latest trunk and see if anything gets unclogged..

Pugins page says I am running BuddyPress 1.0-RC2. /plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/ no longer exists and /bp-themes/buddypress-member/ is confirmed.

An edit to my initial message: I’m running trunk 1387, not 1381.

Thanks Jeff but none of that seemed to help. No error messages in the log, no other plugins running, everything is where it should be. I didn’t say before but everything was running fine when I was on an older trunk and WPMU 2.7. It was after the upgrade when the problem started. I’m running everything stock and am still getting this message:

You do not have any BuddyPress themes installed.

Please move “/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/” to “/wp-content/bp-themes/” and refresh this page. You can download more themes here.

Ditto. I’m working on trunk 1381 and WPMU 2.7.1. Everything else works as it should. The buddypress-member folder is within wp-content/bp-themes/. It is the only member theme in that folder and I made sure that it was selected correctly within the BuddyPress settings.

    Anyone else?

It integrates in that you can embed the chat room into a page on your BP site. It was not written for BP/WPMU though so no, it does not reference your BP profile in any way. As far as I know, no group chat currently does that.

    @chriscarter

I have no personal connection with the site; I use http://chatroll.com. It looks good, integrates easily, it’s free, no adds, is customizable, and has some nice admin features including archives.

Just an idea to throw out. If a member isn’t signed up for any events, there is still a section on their profile and it will say “Member hasn’t joined any events yet.” Instead, in this case, can the event section just not be listed?

    @chriscarter

I’m testing out the event plugin and it seems to be working as it should. I’m not sure where the Twitter setting is, however. Where do I insert the Twitter account name I want the event posted to?
