In reply to: How to override core function?
This line’s controlling it.
$ending = apply_filters( 'bp_excerpt_append_text', $ending );So, we want to use
function cc_excerpt_append_text() { return 'Stop Reading'; } add_filter( 'bp_excerpt_append_text', 'cc_excerpt_append_text' );Again, just change ‘Stop Reading’ to whatever you want to replace it.
In reply to: How to override core function?So, you want to change the 358?
you can do that with something like thisfunction cc_custom_excerpt_length() { return '20'; } add_filter( 'bp_activity_excerpt_length', 'cc_custom_excerpt_length' );Using that will change the activity excerpt length to 20.
Disclaimer: i am not a professional and this is not advice.
In reply to: Current URL@djpaul – i was actually thinking the same thing after i wrote the above, just testing a patch before adding it to trac for feedback.
BTW, we need to be more consistant… why do we use displayed_user for the displayed user but we use current_group for displayed group ect.?
In reply to: Front Side Toolbar?@aboveNbelow Sorry, missed your reply. What’s your definition of “main nav bar”, i thought you where referring to the site navigation, for example on this site where it has the home, about, blog etc links and that article will help move it their (or atleast help with the process).
Where exactly do you want the my account menu? (i’m really slow at times, so sometimes you need to spell out in detail what you want. lol)
EDIT: If by “main nav bar” you mean the WP Toolbar, it’s built in by default, i believe. If not, it will be in 1.6.
In reply to: Current URLBuddyPress uses different functions for different components,
“ will echo the current (displayed) profile’s url (used in your example)In reply to: BuddyPress Profile Page Tabs@Tfazlani – It’s possible. It would consist of using bp_core_new_nav_item();
https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/functions/core/bp_core_new_nav_item/Basically, create a screen function (what displays on the screen) and hook it into bp_core_new_nav_item;
This loop will probably help you build the screen function (splitting up profile details) – https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-profile-data-loop-bp_has_profile/
EDIT: WordPress has some helpful examples on adding admin menu’s and as BuddyPress’ new_nav_item is built in a similar way might help if you have issues – https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/add_menu_page
In reply to: Non-members@ktrojan
Non-members of a group?
or
Non-members of the site?Nonetheless, That feature isn’t provided out of the box.
Is using bbpress site-wide forums out of the question for the functionality you require? You can allow both with bbpress.
In reply to: [Resolved] Confused a little about WP and BP.@o4tuna – to follow on from @mrjarbenne‘s replies – BuddyPress doesn’t kill anything that WordPress does, WordPress by default allows you to move the blog to a sub-page (as done on this site) or on your homepage (testbp.org) BuddyPress doesn’t touch it. The only real time that BuddyPress touches functionality of WordPress is for small fixes when conflicts arise (for example, theirs code which ensures that the activity stream functions correctly on the homepage – as it was having issues at one point) or to enhance the features to provide an amazing experience.
In reply to: [Resolved] Remove the buddybar.css from loadingremove_action( ‘bp_init’, ‘bp_core_load_buddybar_css’ );
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/trunk/bp-core/bp-core-buddybar.php#L671You could also filter it.
In reply to: Enable Capital Letters in UsernamesThis has been fixed in the currently unreleased 1.6.
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2207In reply to: Buddypress & Thesis@coxis123 Their site states “The Thesis Theme framework is a premium template system for WordPress that is designed to serve as the rock-solid foundation beneath any kind of website.”
With “any” emphasized… So, you can assume so.

But, it’s up to the theme developer to make their themes compatible, so you should ask them.
In reply to: Front Side Toolbar?Put define ( ‘BP_DISABLE_ADMIN_BAR’, true ); into your bp-custom.php file to turn the bar off.
SEE: https://codex.buddypress.org/extending-buddypress/changing-internal-configuration-settings/With your other question, yes it is possible. See this tutorial.
http://www.michaelkuhlmann.com/tutorials/customizing-admin-bar/@kosarr it could be any number of a hundred things and without more information about your server etc, we can only guess.
Anyways, have you tried this? http://www.404-error.org/buddypress-404-file-not-found-fix/
In reply to: How to fix BP-admin bar width and characteristics`body#bp-default #wp-admin-bar .padder {
min-width: 100%;
max-width: 100%;
}`or just change it to whatever width you want.
In reply to: Profile Fields becomes URL linkfix? It’s like that by design, it allows a user to search for other .users with similar interests..
However, if you want more control – Their’s a plugin for that. (we should seriously steal apples “theirs an app for that” marketing.)
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-profile-filters-for-buddypress/In reply to: SPAM ON ACTIVITY PAGE!“The most important plugin (imho) which is not available is new user moderation…”
In 1.6 the core devs have been doing some work on user capability stuff to make user moderation easier and mentioned that some of the changes will “give us more control over a users status and capabilities for later.” So, something like that ‘could’ end up in core *later*

See: https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4038But, their are wordpress’ plugins that might help keep non-authorised users out – eg. https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-secure-invites/ & https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-invites/
In reply to: BuddyPress and BuddyPress@alanchrishughes – the plugin (Buddypress template pack) is simply a utility tool, it’s not required.
What does it do? From what i gather from your comment above, you tried to copy the template folders from Tpack, but if you look inside your theme, the folders are actually empty, which is why it’s not working
The plugin copies the folders from the bp-default theme (inside the buddypress plugin)So – you either need to turn on (activate) template pack and go through the configure stuff (once done you can deactivate the template pack) or, copy over the files manually from within plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/dp-default
If you choose to not keep the template pack active, you may also need to copy over the functions into your themes functions.php (https://plugins.svn.wordpress.org/bp-template-pack/trunk/bpt-functions.php) as it has some almost required stuff (like registering the “add friends” buttons)
In reply to: A few questionsI’ll leave the Ajax question to someone else who actually understands ajax stuff.
2. Would it be possible to make a app that notifies you when someone mentions you, comments on your status, ect kinda like facebooks app i have a andromo app going
Native mobile apps are entirely possible to do — but will require some heavy development work. BuddyPress wasn’t built with mobile apps in mind as it started before the “mobile craze” went off. So, it really depends on your definition of possible.

If your happy with a Web App though, their are afew plugins, such as @modemloopers BP Mobile https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-mobile/
In reply to: Calling currently displayed userbp_displayed_user_username() is a wrapper function that echo’s the username.
If you want to use it to “call stuff from a database”, i think you need to use the following (which will return the username rather than echo it.bp_get_displayed_user_username();
In reply to: Hiding Profile Fields1. Can I control what fields are visible during registration?
By default everything within the ‘base’ profile group is shown in the registration field, you can mess around with the stuff within the registration template, removing the call to the base group and then adding the required fields in manually… but your better off just moving things you don’t want on the register page into other groups.2. Can I control when certain Profile fields are displayed in the Profile Section?
Sure can. https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-profile-data-loop-bp_has_profile/
3. Can I control when certain Profile Group Fields are displayed?
See codex link above.The profile data loop includes two loops, one for the fields and another one for the field groups.In reply to: SPAM ON ACTIVITY PAGE!@lairbear spam is an issue that is almost impossible to control, even the big proprietary social networks have a huge issue with spam – and they have alot of money to spend on controlling it. (I’m very popular with all of the really, really hot ladies on Facebook… lol)
In BuddyPress 1.6 their will be some anti-spam tools for the activity feed built-in that will hook into Akismet (http://akismet.com) to help control it, and while it has cut it down by alot on my test sites using it, nothing can beat manual HUMAN moderation. (Related ticket: https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3660)
Theirs also afew plugins that add captchas to the registration page, to kick them out before their even in… oh, and this article is pretty comprehensive – http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/security/best-practices-for-preventing-buddypress-spam-user-registrations/
In reply to: using template for register page@emaarkhan you can (or; are supposed to be able to?) customize the registration page with a registration/register.php template in your theme. Is that not working?
In reply to: [Unresolved] Activity FilteringAhh, your right. Sorry about that.
I’ll have another look at it in the moment. But, i guess if all else fails theirs a really nice looking filter hook inside bp_has_activities that looks like it has alot of potential to do something awesome
In reply to: [Unresolved] Activity Filteringif ( bp_has_activities( bp_ajax_querystring( ‘activity’ ) . ‘&scope=friends&scope=just-me’ ) ) :
*note: Just woke up. Still tired. Probably put something in the wrong spot… please add the code to your site carefully incase everything blows up.
EDIT: Here is a direct link to the list of scopes in trunk if your interested in doing some extra reading.
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/trunk/bp-activity/bp-activity-template.php#L322In reply to: modify contents/display of individual activities@ORyanMcentire The content section for multi-lined activity is called via bp_activity_content_body() around line 46 inside the entry.php file.
If you remove that, then all the activities will become two lines (the action, and the meta buttons).
“Bob posted an update 200 years ago
comment, favorite, delete”That should get it close to what you seem to be looking for. To modify the action line however, is slightly more difficult… and requires filtering of the bp_activity_action function.
and to modify the meta buttons is around line 60 of entry.php
