In reply to: Mobile status updates
Firstly, As Modemlooper (the author of BP mobile) stated here
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/creating-extending/forum/topic/using-bp-content-api-to-create-an-iphone-app/“BuddyPress has no API for external communication. It was created before the mobile scene took off and now apps have become the norm. You could load web pages in a native app that were optimized but it wouldn’t be 100% like a native app. You could also create your own json API.”
Secondly, since when has StatusNet supported SMS’? SMS’ are very difficult to do and will need to be done on a site-by-site basis by yourself… it really is impossible to do properly as an opensource thing as you will need to have mobile address’ in all sorts of weird countries and some way to distinguish between sites.
eg. i sms 0445493509485 with what i’m doing, but where does it go? I cant see how sms would work in an opensource project. Even twitter has trouble supporting every carrier…
RE “StatusNet (and kin) has excellent client support – could it be used as a middleware to BP? Or could Twitter be used?”
Nothings around for statusnet, is their license even compatible with wordpress’ gpl? but you could use twitter via https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddystream/
In reply to: Create new page (i.e. /user/mentions)edited the code as i had left out load template. see here – http://pastebin.com/Zy1bbZi3
In reply to: Create new page (i.e. /user/mentions)@abysshorror – when you say “user/mentions” do you mean a page with a url structure like
https://buddypress.org/community/members/abysshorror/mentionsAssuming you set up the nav item with https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/functions/core/bp_core_new_nav_item/
The next part is to use the screen_function parameter, i learnt how to use it via the admin menu’s codex as the item navs are based off it… https://codex.wordpress.org/Administration_Menus
Here’s a quick example i just wrote, (note: untested and i wrote it really quickly, so dont expect it to work out of the box) [Updated, see below]
To use a php file in it, you would just replace the echos with a require(‘myfile.php’); (or get_template_part) to get the php file inside the screen function.
In reply to: I NEED A PLUGIN FOR:Buddypress Albums allows users to upload photos…
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-album/bp_has_members() has an alphabetical type parameter.
https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-members-loop/Have you tried that?
regarding question B, that can be done via your theme by commenting out/removing the options you dont want… for members that will be around line 55 of members/index.php
In reply to: Who Makes Decisions around here?Could i suggest trying Elgg (.org)? It might be better suitable for your needs?
In reply to: Change Activity Stream Text[resolved]@40cooper – the best way to modify text is via a translation file

1) Groups in buddypress are like ‘post types’ in wordpress, while you can deactivate it so that it doesnt do anything, it’s hardcoded into the core and the only way to remove it completely is by editing the core plugin.In reply to: Buddypress for a dating site?To answer your question, it could definitely be used for an online dating community.
Their is ALOT of code around the web that you can find via google.com to create a private community…
here is one: http://bp-tricks.com/snippets/code/close-down-your-site-for-logged-in-members-only/In reply to: Site Wide Buddypress Wiki, or Docs@jaredvd – When i attempted to create a wiki awhile ago using a modified version of wiki lite I used the voodoopress guide (http://voodoopress.com/how-to-post-from-your-front-end-with-no-plugin/) and then changed the description textarea to use the wp_editor (https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_editor to get a front-end ‘create article’ page.
Just make sure you change the ‘post_type’ to incsub_wiki to turn the articles into wikis.
You will also probably want to wrap the form with a is_loggedin conditional.In reply to: Site Wide Buddypress Wiki, or DocsAt the moment, the only site-wide plugin still being maintained is the wiki plugin by wpmudev https://buddypress.org/community/groups/wordpress-wiki-plugin/home/
But; despite being listed here on the BP plugin directory, it’s completely a WordPress plugin and doesn’t integrate with buddypress at all.
EDIT: If your interested in building your own solution, i’m sure @johnjamesjacoby could also give you some ideas based on what he used for the codex – https://codex.buddypress.org/ (eg, the code he used to get the wiki pages into the activity stream – though, theirs no front-end editing functionality here yet, so you will have to work out that part yourself)
@kapitol – for css; you might want to check out https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_enqueue_style
In reply to: a brand new gaming social network@djbnotts – sorry, missed your reply the other day. Your welcome. Just thought i’d suggest it as users seeing errors is a serious problem.

BP Private community does the exact same thing as David’s code (his code is their ‘default’ mode, and their optional method can be easily done easily just by removing the Exclamation mark just before the conditional).
Private community doesn’t seem to be maintained anymore (last update was in 2010) so you might be better off using that code as it’s slightly more recent and works in current version of 1.6 bleeding.
In reply to: Here’s What I Want To Do… Can You Explain How?Membership – have you seen S2members? https://buddypress.org/community/groups/s2member/
The name, city ect, you can get that by default in buddypress via your wp-admin – go to buddypress/profile fields.
The profile stuff you can achieve by modifying the members/single/* files in your theme https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
Search – https://buddypress.org/community/groups/bp-better-directories/home/
To answer your last question – Pretty much.
The only plugin i couldn’t find was the one that forces buddypress to do my laundry…
In reply to: Remove “delete” link in site activity== or simply remove the “delete” link? ==
Sure can. CSS is your friend

.delete-activity {
display: none;
}@jmk10276 in buddypress 1.6 their will be Akismet integration built into buddypress, which will help kill the activity spam. https://buddypress.org/about/roadmap/
Their isn’t really any spam protection plugins for buddypress available right now though,
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-labs/ is the plugin that the 1.6 core akismet-intergration is based on, but as the plugin page states “all experiments are in beta, and come with no guarantees.”Another option might be to use a captcha plugin to kill them at the registration page – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/si-captcha-for-wordpress/
In reply to: Activity Stream – Now Friends & Profile Picture(2) – You may want to see the Block activity types plugin – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-block-activity-stream-types/
In reply to: activity stream customizationYou can remove the button styling via css to turn it into plain text. something like…
`div.activity-meta .acomment-reply a {
background: white;
background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, white 0%, #FFF100%);
background: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, color-stop(0%,white), color-stop(100%,#EDEDED));
background: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, white 0%,#FFF 100%);
background: -o-linear-gradient(top, white 0%,#FFF 100%);
background: -ms-linear-gradient(top, white 0%,#FFF 100%);
filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient( startColorstr=’#ffffff’, endColorstr=’#FFF’,GradientType=0 );
background: linear-gradient(top, white 0%,#FFF 100%);
border: none;
}`ETC.
You can also use CSS to remove the avatar
`.activity-list .activity-content .activity-header img.avatar {
display: none !important;
}`In reply to: [Resolved] Disable Nested Comment@heruputra – as @Mercime said, you can easily do it with CSS, removing the indent styles so that they appear to be seperate comments to the activity.
You could also use this code – https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/1870#comment:2
changing the depth to 1 will remove the ‘reply’ button on comments.In reply to: [Resolved] a few questions.you can add it to your bp-custom.php – https://codex.buddypress.org/extending-buddypress/bp-custom-php/
or a small functions plugin (i personally prefer this method
) – http://justintadlock.com/archives/2011/02/02/creating-a-custom-functions-plugin-for-end-usersIt MIGHT also work in your themes functions.php file, but i haven’t tested it.

In reply to: Site wide notices don’t create notifications!?a site-wide notice is similar to Facebook’s Megaphone feature as seen here: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7160/6624474793_c43005212c_z.jpg
