@surfartculture: members can add widgets to their member blogs automatically by going to their dashboards. That’s how BuddyPress works. You can make a test member blog and just switch the theme and members can add all the widgets they want. Do you know how to get to the member dashboard? Cruise through the top menu, you’ll find it.

Let’s keep this thread on topic, OK? :-)

This thread is for how to hard code a sidebar. I am looking for where to put the right code.

For example: Where would I put “<?php wp_list_categories(‘title_li=’ . __(‘Categories:’)); ?>” to have the categories show up in the rightmost sidebar?

What file do I put the code into and where?

Where do I put the code for each individual sidebar?

    OK, this helps as well

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Customizing_Your_Sidebar

Now, how can I find where to put those customizations if I’ve

copied bp-default and named it bp-default-members

copied bp-sn-parent and named it bp-sn-parent-members

    appropriately called bp-sn-parent-members from bp-default-member’s style.css file

…what I mean is that when I look at sidebar.php. it looks like it’s putting the same code into all 3 sidebars to me…so how do I put the customization I want into the sidebar I select?

Also, since this is BuddyPress, how do I make sure that I’m pulling in “Recent Posts” from the member blog and not from all blogs…maybe that’s what happens anyway…

and how do I define what people will see when viewing a member’s posts? Is that one of the existing sidebars? I actually hope not, since I want to code that differently.

I’ve been messing around with BuddyPress and WPMU since April 09 or so. I haven’t been able to get my community up and running yet.

Single WP seems to be an alternative that might work for me, but whew, I “just” got a semi-functional WPMU-BuddyPress site going.

My community doesn’t really “need” separate blogs for each member…just a way to have a profile page, post stuff and see sitewide activity. Don’t even need them to post “pages,” just posts and post categories really.

Right now, I’m working on configuring a user blog theme that has widgets pre-set and a BuddyPress WPMU set up that does not allow users to change their themes or widgets.

I use WP on several sites, and “kind of” know WP. WPMU has been a real challenge for me.

…Not sure whether to test this though…

Dear Andrea, I’m certain we could make this work, and I’d like to organize a quick skype session with you to get it done. How much would 30 min with you cost?

    Here’s where I’m at:

    http://community.urine-therapy.org/testing/

Uses my modification of “BuddyPress Social Network Parent Theme Members”

    and

    http://community.urine-therapy.org/testing2/

usese my modification of “BuddyPress Default Members 1.1”

    as described here

    http://www.bp-tricks.com/design/member-blog-themes-to-match-your-buddypress-theme/comment-page-1/#comment-133

Now, “testing2” is partially working, but

    1) I don’t want the users adding widgets or changing themes…frankly, if they didn’t have access to the dashboard and just had access to a Post editor, I’d be fine with that. Register, Make a blog, start posting, uploading PDF’s, audios, videos, etc.

Regarding the standard navigation, here’s how I see things:

Home should take you to the main site

    http://community.urine-therapy.org/

not to the home of the member-blog. And it should have a running ticker of all activity (basically all blog posts).

Blog should take you to your own blog (if you are a member)

Members should take you to a sitewide list of members, not a list of the “members” of the member blog.

Groups should show the groups created by members sitewide

Forums (I think this can be removed for now).

Blogs (this should be the same as members, since each member should only be able to create one blog).

Can you see how I just want to enable a community, but I don’t want to complicate things with blogs and sub blogs and members of sub blogs etc. etc. Basically a member gets a blog, everyone sees what that member does at that blog, we all comment.

    Does that make sense?

Thanks, I’m kinda hangin’ my head over here. I just deleted the whole mu and buddypress install, made a new DB, and got a Database Tables Missing Fatal Error upon installing WPMU.

Since my community is not launched yet, I could start over, but now I’m at step 0.

Anyway, regarding themes: What I want is for users to not have many options (if any). They come in and have a blog that works the way it works. Andrea, sounds like your suggestion would work…

Seems like this should be an “out the box” kind of thing…but here I am with a bonging WMPU install… :-(

    OK, will do…

Put my project on hold till I could figure out how to do this…maybe the latest release changes things…

Still not there yet, put my whole project on hold b/c of this…I think the latest releases may have resolved this issue and I will check into it…

These two threads also contain relevant info:

However, I’m still interested in distilling a procedure out of them. How should I proceed?

Hi Jeff, I did not notice that this was marked as resolved. I still don’t know how to create a buddypress install with a cohesive theme for members. I’ve been checking every week or so to see if someone may have answered my questions about what it is I’d need to hard code. I’ll check to see which theme I modified and I’ll see if that makes a difference. I’m still looking to distill a procedure out of this that I can follow and share with others. Best, Dainis

Thank you very much for responding. I really appreciate it.

Everyone keeps saying “hard code the links,” but I don’t know what to hard code the links to? :-)

Can someone fill in the blanks?

    Cheers!

Just replaced the 6 instances of get_option(‘home’) in header.php of my member blog theme with $bp->root_domain as described.

Don’t see any difference in the behavior of the site.

Really impressed with delsolownersclub wow. great work.

I’d love to turn this into a procedure for the community, but I don’t know how to do it yet. Stuck here too: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1632&page=2&replies=43#post-14553

My “solution” if you can call it that, works, but none of the widgets are pre-set. Member blogs come up, but each new member would have to configure their own widgets.

I’d like members to be able to join and have everything set up for them.

How can we turn this into a brainstorming session, where at the end of it, all of us get what we need and we can release it to the community?

Anyone have a decent “community theme” set up that works for member blogs? Willing to share?

So, basically, I’d really like to launch my community. It is an alternative health site that basically tops the list for advanced raw-foodist supernutrition practices. Anyone interested in helping, please get in touch.

I’m sure there are templates and structures out there that I could use and tweak, I just need to find the right person to work with me and supply the missing information I simply don’t know.

I got a very kind response from Andy to search for some blog theme setting plugins. I have plugin commander and new blog defaults installed, but neither allow me to create a standard member theme with the widget settings all in place.

I don’t feel right about launching my community until I can give users a standard blog template, and I don’t know how to continue.

    LOL!

Wow, yes, I sure would be mega-thrilled if the theme from that JPG were released. Frankly, I don’t even want to launch my BuddyPress community without some kind of cohesive theme where blog owners don’t have to do any configuration.

Is there anything similar or functional available now? Also, were my procedural posts just goofy, or could some of my suggestions work with minimal effort?

From my perspective, this thread continues the topics brought up here nicely:
