Yes, the template hierarchy will use template parts from your theme:
If you’re using a theme that is updated, then, yes, you should use a child theme to keep your changes.
In reply to: Showing groups, filter usersHi Marc-
It sounds like you’re just getting started. Custom fields are part of the extended profile component. Read more about it here:
It is not really possible to show groups with any richness outside of the group page. Your best bet is probably to customize your group templates to show what you want. The template hierarchy will help you:
An all-user overview with search and filtering is the members directory available at yoursite.com/members
In reply to: why buddypress have unknow autocomplete code?Hello there. BuddyPress doesn’t add jQuery to a site (it relies on WordPress to provide jQuery). It looks to me like you’re using a plugin to fetch jQuery from a CDN rather than use the local version that comes with WordPress. Disable your plugins one at a time until the code changes, then you’ll have found the cuplrit.
In reply to: url with code for usernameI’m not sure exactly what you’re asking for, but my best guess is that you’re looking for a URL that will redirect the current user to his or her user profile.
In reply to: Show number of posts per memberWordPress has a built-in function for getting the number posts published by a user:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/count_user_postsIf you’ve been able to figure out how to display profile data, use the same approach here, and you should be in good shape.
In reply to: Moderation for buddypress activityThis plugin doesn’t add a pending queue for approval, but it does allow users to flag inappropriate posts for moderation:
https://github.com/hwdsbcommons/BP-Moderation/In reply to: Moving time-since spanThe simplest answer is probably to style that span as
display: blockthen you have a number of options for forcing it below other elements. It’s going to depend a lot on your theme. If you choose to modify the template, the template to modify would go in
child-theme/buddypress/members/member-header.php.In reply to: Login IssuesThere are a few non-BuddyPress reasons I can think of for this:
• The page is cached by WP Super Cache or a similar plugin
• Your shared server has some sort of caching built-in (like object caching or expires headers)
• Your browser is using the cached version from your last visit to that page (try a different browser to test)The setup you describe works ok for me on my local test (no caching enabled) installation. You might contact your hosting company to see what is enabled on your shared server.
In reply to: Email activationThis is probably a server configuration problem. This simple plugin can help you figure out if your WP installation can send emails:
Alternatively, the emails may be being sent, but ending up in your users’ spam folders.
In reply to: Additional info on group memberlistHi Georgio-
It depends on how they’re being added. I’m guessing that they’re being added (by a plugin?) on the
bp_group_members_list_item_actionorbp_group_members_list_itemaction hook. If I were adding a button in that case, I’d add a conditional like in this example:add_action( 'bp_group_members_list_item', 'conditional_group_member_list_item' ); function conditional_group_member_list_item() { // Check the member list item member ID against the current user's ID // Only show added info if the user is not the current user. if ( bp_get_group_member_id() != bp_loggedin_user_id() ) { ?> <span>This is NOT me.</span> <?php } else { // This member listing is the current user. ?> <span>This is me.</span> <?php } }In reply to: Magic Quotes? Strip Slashes? Why is this an issue? Thanks for the update!
In reply to: Goodbye Buddypress?Hi @VentureCore-
It seems like you can make avatars work remotely. Check
bp_core_fetch_avatar()for some filter opportunities. https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/2.9.2/src/bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php#L98I’ve not done what you’re trying to do, but it seems that the filter points
bp_core_avatar_folder_url,bp_core_avatar_folder_dircould be useful, but there’s a filter on the final result atbp_core_fetch_avatarfor the “html” output version andbp_core_fetch_avatar_urlfor just the url.Cover images should actually be easier to manage. Take a look in https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/2.9.2/src/bp-core/bp-core-attachments.php#L28
Alternatively, you could filter the other plugin to ignore avatar and cover image requests. Lots of ways to solve this, I’d bet.
In reply to: Wiki within Each GroupI’d use BuddyPress Docs for this purpose, but I’m a fan of and contributor to that plugin. It’s great for creating organized shared libraries with tags and search ability.
If you’d rather it be more forum-like, use bbPress.

In reply to: set a default tab for non friendsWhat about using a custom member front page? Then you’d have total flexibility:
Custom Front Pages for your users profilesOtherwise, I think you could conditionally filter
bp_displayed_user_get_front_templateto specifymembers/single/activity.phpfor self and friends andmembers/single/profile.phpfor non-friends. See this function:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/2.9.2/src/bp-members/bp-members-template.php#L1397In reply to: Bullet Points on the Buddypress MenuRegarding your first question, it appears that your theme is adding marks to your navigation menu. You’ll need to inspect the element to see what rule is causing it, then override it. (Or choose a different theme.)
Regarding your second question, if your theme has a full-width page template, select it for your BuddyPress pages. If it doesn’t you’ll have to create one, or choose a different theme.
In reply to: Correct CHILD-THEME dir doesnt workHI @khappamj-
It sounds like you’re overriding the file the right way and at the right location. There must be some other reason the file isn’t being used. I’d try checking the file permissions to make sure that apache can read the file.
In reply to: Permalinks slugsHi @snecz-
Yes, you can filter the starred slug using the
bp_get_messages_starred_slugfilter. Unfortunately, the ‘sentbox’ slug is not currently customizable. Here’s an example of how you might filter the starred slug:
add_filter( 'bp_get_messages_starred_slug', 'bp_codex_filter_starred_slug' ); function bp_codex_filter_starred_slug( $slug ) { return 'important'; }Were you adding the avatar upload to the registration form via some custom code? (I think I’ve seen plugins and such that do that.) It looks like you’ve removed that step for now, so maybe all is well?

In reply to: Two different themes possible?BuddyPress uses a theme compatibility layer, meaning it uses its own templates that are designed to drop into any theme. You can overload all kinds of template parts for BuddyPress:
However, there are plugins (I’ve not tested) that you could maybe get to work if you have two themes in mind: https://wordpress.org/plugins/jonradio-multiple-themes/

In reply to: Non WP login pageThis is sort of a big WordPress question that lots of people would like to change, but it’s not that easy. You could try using the plugin Theme My Login, which would need to be applied carefully, as it overlaps with BP a bit. https://wordpress.org/plugins/theme-my-login/ (I have no idea if this is a good plan, you’ll just have to try it.)
The black bar across the top is a WordPress per-user preference “Show Toolbar when viewing site”. There are many resources on the web about how to disable it/change the behavior:
https://www.google.com/search?q=wordpress+disable+toolbar+for+subscribersIn reply to: Profile Page as Member DashboardThere’s no way to do that via shortcode as far as I know, but lots of ways to do it via theme. You could apply a page template to the “members” page to modify what is output. You could also overload the template at
/buddypress/members/single/home. Read more about the template hierarchy:This is the codex article I was thinking of:
In reply to: Change Profile URL to WP Default Author URLSure, you can add a filter on the
bp_get_member_permalinkhook and do whatever you wish. The BP member profile is much richer than the the authors page, though–if you’re not using the member profile fully, are you sure you need BuddyPress for your site? For the second question, use the shortcut link: https://mysite.org/members/me which will redirect users to their profile.
Best,
-David
You can save extra things manually on the
bp_core_signup_userhook:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/2.9.1/src/bp-members/bp-members-functions.php#L1900But I imagine that the simpler answer would be to use Profile Fields. If you add profile fields to the base group, then they appear on the registration form and are saved at signup. https://codex.buddypress.org/administrator-guide/extended-profiles/

In reply to: Make friend field visible only to account ownerHi @paksunny-
#1 can be accomplished by adding this code to you
bp-custom.phpfile (or wherever you keep your customizations): https://gist.github.com/dcavins/c65f3856dd6ed5be37eef115ab09405a#2 Try this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-private-message-for-friends-only/
