    Anyone else noticing this? Or is it just me…

    Trac comments say this won’t be ready for BP 1.3. :(

    But maybe that means 1.3 isn’t that far off…

    To me, this is one of the most important missing features.

    Thought of one more awesome application for Following: Search results.

    When someone searches a topic on the site with the new unified search, they see blog results, forums, groups, etc… How cool would it be to be able to “Follow” that query?

    Say, for example, I wanted to find a good Chat Plugin to use…I could search “chat” and Follow the results…never missing any action.

    Talk about customization!

    @erich73,
    Done. I hope this gets traction because it would make our communities a lot more intuitive!

    Looking at my own site, here are some of the kinds of things it would be cool to Follow:
    Blogs
    Forum Discussions
    Forum Tags
    Tags and Categories from blogs
    Groups
    Members
    Albums/Galleries
    Links Lists
    …
    This would make it really easy to keep track of everything…which right now is a huge pain!

    “Follow” functionality request: allow members to follow Blogs, Forums, Galleries, and just about everything else offered with Buddypress, not just Members.

    I’d love to be able to Follow my favorite blogs, forum discussions, etc. It’s more specific than just following a member and more dynamic than just adding as a Favorite. Ideally, there could be “Follow this ____ ” buttons all over buddypress and even tabs showing the number of followers for a given item.

    You’re not alone…I’m on BP 1.2.3 and MU 2.9.2 with a custom child theme and avatar cropping stopped working for me sometime in the last couple of weeks. I assumed it was a plugin conflict, but I’ve disabled them one-by-one and retried with no luck.

    I’m having an issue when I hit “Fetch Site Details,” nothing happens. No freezing, whitescreen or errors. Just nothing happens. I haven’t been able to find a conflict. Anyone else have this?

    @r-a-y,

    They only choose which pages, no? Is there a condition to apply for being logged-in to buddypress? https://codex.wordpress.org/Conditional_Tags

    Update:
    My hosting company, PSEK, was able to remove the code from each theme. So, as of now, my themes are clean, my passwords are changed, and I’ve got a new install of MU.

    I’m still getting memory errors, indicating that the virus is probably still there somewhere. We’ll see.

    Within a few hours, we’ll probably know if this is good enough or if there are continued problems.

    Per @andrea_r, pulled the access logs and found an 2 IP address – mine and one other. Here’s what I found:
    May 9 18:28:52 wpmu pure-ftpd: (?@187.45.193.209) [WARNING] Authentication failed for user [housingstorm] – probably failing because i changed my passwords.

    Now, I searched for that IP address and it’s from Brazil. In my google-search, i also found it referenced on several other forums as an attacker and I even found an access log file for another site that showed them gaining access.

    One forum mentioned that there were extra files in their database after the attack.

    My local computer scan was clean, so i’m not sure how they got access, but i would recommend banning this IP address and monitoring your access logs.

    for what it’s worth, I’m planning a single, unified search for the front page, with specific searches on specific pages: a member search on the members page, etc.

    Right now, multiple search options is confusing for most users.

    Ok.

    So far, my desktop is clean…no viruses. My passwords are changed.

    I’ve installed all new MU files and tried to run the Exploit Scanner, but getting an “out of memory” error…likely from the worm using up my memory.

    From what I can tell so far, the infection seems limited to the functions.php files of my themes. But, of course, it could be disguised as anything deep in my database somewhere.

    The challenge i have is that I can’t delete the code fast enough…By the time I’m on the 11th theme, the first 10 are infected again.

    I do have an idea…if I clean up the functions.php file, then make that file unwritable, I would be able to remove the code from all 300 of my themes.

    Then, i could make a few of them writable again and see if it comes back?

    I guess I’m just optimistic that this is the only malicious code…

    @hnla,

    I don’t know yet. I’ve been good about using strong passwords and changing them every so often. And, I’m on a dedicated server, not shared.

    I’m running some scans now on my local computer to see if anything there has grabbed my ftp info.

    At this point, my best guess is something in a theme or plugin that I’ve installed, but I’ve tried to be very careful about only installed stuff from reputed places.

    My problem now is that, I’ve got to find it and kill it or it will just start up again.

    Thanks @andrea_r
    I’ve changed every password and am working on loading in a fresh MU install, then I’ll start working on themes.

    Ug.

    One part that I find confusing is that it’s not intuitive where to post. For example, I see posts about specific plugins in the community activity section (posted there only), in forums (where plugins are discussed both in “Creating and Extending” and in “Third Party Components and Plugins”), and in the activity section of that plugin’s page.

    Seems a bit disjointed…which is fine for this site because we’ll all take the time to learn the quirks.

    But on our own sites, I can see casual members being confused. An example: I have several members who continually write blog posts in the activity stream, thinking that they are blog posts! In other words, if it’s too confusing for a 2nd grader to figure out quickly, then it’s not going to be user-friendly for most of the public.

    @gregfielding

    As far as I can tell, that’s all that’s missing for this to work with MU

    “It should work on WPMU, just activate the plugin on the blog where BuddyPress is active.”

    Any way to get it to count comments members make on another member’s blog? (not just the main blog)

    Not sure…what’s your website? I’ll test on yours and you can test on mine.

    Suggestion: Eliminate Automatic Joining of Public Groups

    I’ve got a problem with having to join Groups to participate in the Forums for two reasons:

    1. The prospect of having to join a Group is not intuitive and will intimidate users, preventing them from participating. What does it mean to join a group? Will they now be subject to group emails? Or other solicitations from within the group? There is no practical reason for this barrier to exist.

    2. Groups should serve a social purpose (common interests, common goals, etc.) and joining one should MEAN something. Looking at my profile and seeing that I’m in 5 groups should tell a visitor a lot about who I am. However, in this format, I’ll end up being members of dozens of groups, when all I really want is to add to those forum discussions. In this format, the value of being in a Group is cheapened. And, there could be a couple of groups on a site that a member really wants to participate and follow, but now their activity stream is cluttered with activity from all these discussions. From a user’s perspective, these are 2 different things.

    Maybe have a checkbox below your forum entry asking: “Join the __________ Group?” or “Request to Join the ______________ Group?”
