@hnla Have we deleted the bbPress register.php file on this site, and changed the the BuddyPress register slug? Does it account for any of the spam registrations on here?
There was another one this morning (actually, they been operating for a while) – posting v.large nonsense status updates riddled with spam links
-
I don’t think either has been done, but now that Boone fella with the aberrant ‘B’ has some site access we may be able to change these things.
-
The bbPress register.php file is indeed there, but it doesn’t appear to be web accessible. BP_REGISTER_SLUG is the default ‘register’ on buddypress.org.
-
@boonebgorges web accessible? does that mean what so ever, that form can in no way be used and returned, I’m perhaps thinking of curl scripts?

@rogercoathup @hnla Is there specific download version that need to worry about or just on bp org site?
-
@intimez – no, the register.php file is still in the bbPress folder inside the bp-forums folder on all installations.
I think this is the key to stopping spam – so, yes, delete it from your installation if you are having problems.
suerte!

@hnla – right thread!
The issue is: it was a difficult and not very technically astute ‘customer’ who’d opened the later thread, and there we are closing his thread and pointing him to something confusing and apparently inconclusive – even you had to get Ray to re-open it briefly, and check the solution again. 🙂
I can’t see the guy asking the…[Read more]

I noted earlier in the thread the mention of adding topic content to meta description as well, which never got covered. it’s difficult as the OP sort of hopes for absolute solutions when often there are not or at least not that don’t involve coding skills and API knowledge.
Sadly the OP probably fled at least their last comment was simply “So no…[Read more]

Okay, just got to this (/cc @rogercoathup).
Concern raised and duly noted. There are so many threads talking about the same thing. And there are only so many people answering them.
Try and see it from the mod’s standpoint. I’m not getting defensive and I truly accept the constructive feedback. The rationale behind closing a thread is to…[Read more]

@r-a-y I didn’t have you in my ‘gunsights’ with regard to handling criticism… so, apologies if it appeared a little scattergun. I appreciate your to the point, technically aware replies.

A few more that are creating profiles to spam link their description (although with just a few links): meloanorman1, limuya28, smythdanielson, sheffieldsolic

Thanks for the heads up on this.
@hnla It should be pretty straightforward to filter for a certain number of links within a profile and then reject it. I’ll add that to the Ninja list.

Spam problem – a more worrying development
Guys, you might want to check whether your name is being ‘hijacked’ by the BuddyPress spammers.
I found an account that had been setup using my name on a site called fannation.com
When I looked at the blog posts on fannation.com (that had been posted in my name), I…[Read more]

Hmm don’t like the sound of that at all. Is this directly related to group creation here? Off to have a look around!
-
It’s not groups, it’s direct in their profiles – visit any of those users, and you’ll see their profile description is just stuffed with spam links. There were also some who were stuffing status updates with spam links.
-
checking updates / descriptions with multiple links would help a little – anyone have an automated tool for this?
-
We might run that by @boonegorges and see how hard it might be to whip up a simple filter or the like to catch more than 2 or three links and clean them out. the updates and improvements should be implemented any day now. If no provision already made for this issue it might be politely suggested.
-
@boonebgorges (I miss the ‘b’ out as well).
I wrote to fannation, and they deleted the offending account straightaway (good on them).
Can we delete the profiles on here for the already identified users?
-
Thanks for the heads up on this.

I thought it wouldn’t be too hard and WP already has this ability floating aound to trap qnt of links.
btw could you remove that ‘b’ as it catches me out each time 🙂
-
An extra ‘e’ in the surname would help as well 🙂
-
Just be easier if he could get a new name altogether :p

Good to see a fast and positive response from the site.
Only the admin can delete profiles, not sure if Boone has this ability now with the increased access granted?

Marked them all as spammers. We’re working on a solution to this so try to sit tight. No fun for anyone. :/

@hnla It’s good to hear that yall have at least been discussing this then. Or at least it’s reassuring that I’m not totally off the wall here. @djpaul, Yeah, I would agree that communication has improved. But still, I fail to see why it would hurt to add a couple of core committers. Committers are supposed to be […]

p.s. it’s the grouping fields as @hnla points out, that is one of the tricky points.
In old language terms: we needs structs, and then arrays of structs

@hnla – what’s the ‘beef’ with Javascript for the field creation? I assume Boone is just meaning the UI to insert the form fields, etc.

@ellaj – check out this page: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/
@boonebgorges, @mercime, @hnla – the Documentation tab needs to be much more prominent, to save us having to keep typing this URL (and the child theme one) in forum threads

@DJpaul, @hnla Thanks for the feedback. I agree the username would probably be appropriate, but I’m guessing a lot of webmasters like myself would like to be able to edit it to be seo friendly for their site even though alt attributes might not be originally designed for that purpose. It is very common for webmasters who […]
