In reply to: Username not showing on profilepage
Markup should be displaying regardless, fact it doesn’t appear to be might suggest not actually focussing on correct templates? have you overridden defaults?
Is this a site under development? if it is do get rid of that caching plugin, even if it isn’t disable/clear cache while attempting to track issues down.
In reply to: Widget – Login and LogoutBut this is a result of your theme, it’s not the widgets fault! the widget has two very distinct conditions to fullfil, those are not the same in terms of generated markup and thus will display differently, if that upsets your theme then this is a result of the decisions made in the visual styling and need to be then adjusted or styled to account for that change, BP can’t and won’t provide that styling, it can’t tell what situation it’s markup generated from the widget will find itself in.
How would you want to deal with this? it’s a common style to have ‘boxes,boxes actually are a bad thing in certain respects as people the expect them to have a certain height which isn’t how web pages/ markup and CSS work.
If you want the login box area to keep same height then you will need to add a property to force that such as min-height: 300px or whatever unit of measure is preferable.
In reply to: Top bar disappearsAre either of these ‘things’ BP related? Not sure without doing a search what ‘Userpro’ is and probably same for others here, references to ‘top bar’ tend to suggest the WP adminbar which isn’t something that is under BP’s control.

In reply to: Edit the Register (Registration page)Logged in as the user for that account you should have all the permissions required to manage files/directories – file managers usually have the ability to change those permissions so studdy your screen options.
As to changing permissions please be very careful here, unless you have experience you could open up permissions to far, rule of thumb if you set world writeable 777 you should not have even if things do start working 777 is never required.
Other than that we can’t help with hosting account issues, contact you hosts support to resolve the issue if it persists.
In reply to: CSS With custom templateGoing to be hard to help when you provide so little information π
Be a little more or a lot more specific about what issues you are having generalisations aren’t too helpful on technical forums or on technical matters.
Theme in use ? Versions of installed apps?
How have you created this ‘Template’ is it a copy of a current page.php template from your theme?
BuddyPress css is specific to BP screens not any other template that may be created outside it’s knowledge, if I created a page ‘community.php’ and stuck a load of BP functions or loops in that they wouldn’t inherit any particular styling, however BP styles are pseudo namespaced with a ancestor token #buddypress so if you add that ID to an element in your template at a fairly high level such as just after something like #content you might then inherit some styles if rendered BP elements have the usual classes they need.
In reply to: Edit the Register (Registration page)Please contact your host, about server user permissions this isn’t a buddypress or application issue. You could try logging into your hosting account and cpanel or similar control panel and perhaps trying this from whatever file editor it provides.
Going to close this thread as it not going to be productive any longer, @MBWD if you still have problems please start a new thread and post the details of your setup and anything else specific to your install as per the sticky post.
To one and all does this happen if you change to a default WP theme i.e 2014 and disable all plugins except BP? if the problem goes away then it’s theme/plugin related and I’m afraid BP cannot be held responsible or this forum expected to be able to fix things, we’ll always try and help but…
In reply to: Buddypress tabs !!Your English is fine π
tbh you state you’re not a developer and have little interest in being so, problem is there is a level of requirement where you will need some coding experience.
Maybe ajaxing those links would be good but it’ll require some work, however a page refresh is not an old thing it’s how things properly work.
More importantly I wouldn’t give up on BP just for the lack of ajaxed links, many sites are happily using BP installs with those links functioning in a standard fashion.
In reply to: Buddypress tabs !!Firstly you do not need to delete/re-install BP every time, if you are having issues with white screen and you reckon that is BP having the issue then simply re-name the BP plugin folder which will force deactivate the plugin and allow you back in.
As to why you’re having a problem it’s hard to say as you say you are doing stuff yet fail to provide any level of technical detail on what you are trying so it’s near impossible to help further.
Try to provide a little more detail, although if you’re trying to bring ajax functionality to those subnav links then you may struggle.
Beauty of forums are their archives, the question has arisen a few times:
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/how-to-activate-existing-wp-users-as-bp-members-effectively/I needed a solution myself a few years back to activate imported users so ran a function up and uploaded to gist:
https://github.com/hnla/force-show-bp-usersJust updated it to reflect BP 2.0 changes to last activity to use ‘bp_update_user_last_activity()’ – it takes a slightly different approach in running only as admin and requiring that user runs the script by passing a get variable on the url ?action=force-active just to ensure script wasn’t run by accident or repeatedly also it checks and runs on a user id only if that user has no existing entry as I had existing users, I also didn’t want them all to have same time stamp so added in a delay on each iteration of the loop so each had a unique timestamp and just to allow breathing space between updates if loop particularly long.
Updates to script are untested at this time.
We can’t go in and start editing files/templates as that starts to become a paid service I’m afraid.
Go and get setup on a proper host, install WP / BP use a standard WP theme to check all works correctly then start to add your plugins then your chosen theme. If you still have issues post back and we’ll help out.
In reply to: Can I use BuddyPress to a tender service?It could be but you simply outline a general concept you would need to flrsh out the detail then probably be looking around for a developer or development team to build any custom functionality required.
@hami007 don’t publicly post your server user paths /home/etc etc/ I’ve edited yours for you.
This error is saying that the function named does not exist! it likely is a plugin, identify and activate this plugin or locate your header template and if function hardcoded in to the file remove if you are not wanting this feature.
P.S I wouldn’t expect great results on any install with free hosting accounts!
In reply to: header image disapear when inside a topicAs per your other topic here on BP this is a theme related issue and in both cases related to bbP forums these are not really BP issues and this one is rather general theme styling. You need to compare a page / screen working to one that isn’t and track down what is different using a web dev inspection tool found in Firefox(firebug) or Chrome browsers
In reply to: root display problem [Resolved]Marking as resolved then but for future reference remember that bbP is not BP there is a dedicated bbP support forum and docs.
In reply to: Give only certain users BuddyPress accessYou’ll probably find it easiest to use something like S2 Member to provide user access roles, but you’ll still need a few functions that run args to filter out s2_member_level0 ids from the BP members & activity loops and something to prevent access to user account screens.
In reply to: Basic PHP HTML Inserting@irieside not sure why you are asking this here? Who gave this snippet to you and why didn’t that come with instruction on where to place?
If you grabbed it from this page then the question probably should have been asked there:
http://rating-widget.com/support/do-you-have-a-refresh-code-for-ajax-loaded-content/In reply to: How can I use normal comments on BP pages?Not the pages, they don’t really exist as WP pages, BP just uses the file / physical template for it’s structure so when BP pushes it’s date out it sits within the theme in use. You would be needing to tie into the member ID, but that would only be the tip of the issues involved in running something like this up – there may be options or another approach to be found in some existing plugin? otherwise I think there’s quite a lot of fairly hard coding ahead.
In reply to: How can I use normal comments on BP pages?It doesn’t WP comments are tied to the post or page against which they were made, the issue will be that you do not have multiple pages for members but url request which determines the data then pushes that out to the general page.php template , it’s probably possible to do but would require a fair bit of custom coding.
In reply to: How can I use normal comments on BP pages?Define exactly what you call a member page, terminology is critical as what you’re asking doesn’t sound like it makes sense.
You say remove activity streams, there are essentially two the main directory ‘activity’ and the view that seen in user accounts or as they are often referred to ‘profile screens’ the members personal area.
You won’t be able to display comments in the BP screens as BP simply uses the WP pages as a placeholder, it replaces the normal content for it’s own, equally adding the comments template to the BP templates won’t work as those screens are not posts, have no post id to link comments to.
The read more link is rendered or should be rendered and is on a standard install.
If your posts aren’t appearing with a read more link then likely another filter is affecting things – I too have this issue on a test install but not another, generally I have WP filters in place dealing with read more links and text truncation so in my case one of those is lurking somewhere interfering
However overriding BP’s default character number below does force those read more links to appear, suggestive that the post text is already truncated and being returned by bp_create_excerpt unchanged thus then not having a read more link as activity excerpt filter is being told that there is no reason to truncate thus no read more link required.
You can run this filter if you want to (in your functions.php) but it’s not really the solution:
`
function new_activity_excerpt_length() {
return 200;
}
add_filter(‘bp_activity_excerpt_length’, ‘new_activity_excerpt_length’);I suggest that you hunt through your functions and see if you or your theme has implemented WP filters on post excerpts.
This is an edited version of the earlier reply – hnla
@johnnyjonjon
That’s a somewhat odd snippet of JS the theme has written, very generic in nature and definitely not normally something required unless under specific circumstances then one would expect to see a more specific and unique naming for the elements to avoid any notion of globalising a form submit to control via js.I think the issue here is that a very common and generic class token is targeted ‘.submit’, often seen on form controls of type ‘submit’ however BP uses this class on a wrapping element ‘div’ so what is happening more likely than not is that this element is receiving this behaviour and triggering an action before the actual form control and thus not actually passing the form action to BP; certainly adding an event to a parent is going to and does trigger if you move focus slightly of the actual form submit control.
As I don’t think BP uses the class .submit for anything specific (might be wrong but it’s not required to submit the form ) you could think about changing it e.g submit-this’ and re-instate the themes JS even though it’s a snippet of code that ought not to exist in the manner it does but removing may affect other theme functionality
In reply to: WHY create a child theme?But I donβt understand how BuddyPress understand that
It does because it’s written to understand that. WP knows what type of theme is in operation, a main parent ‘ template’ or a theme acknowledging another theme as the template source thus labelling it a child theme; WP provides that information to anything that cares to ask. BP performs a series of simple checks, it looks to see what type of theme in operatio, it checks various hardcoded directory names to see if they exist either in a parent theme or in a child theme and if they contain BP template files, if they exist and do have BP templates then those are used in preference to the original BP ones. It’s not that complex a process but you do need to understand the basic principles of template hierarchy which is a WP construct.
You can only ever have two themes max a parent and one containing ‘some’ copied files or additional files coded. WP always loads the child theme up checks anything in functions.php then looks at the parent theme and loads that themes templates and functions.php unless it has found a necessary template already in the child.
