    I deactivated every plugin and turned them back on one at a time – still no good.

    You said this two posts ago and it made me wonder. When you had all plugins, except BuddyPress, deactivated, did the widget work?

    Also, are you running WPMU 2.7.1 or the bleeding edge 2.8 trunk?

    Great!

    As I often say, we aim to please and sometimes we actually manage to do just that.

    Ah, that does make sense. And yes, the newest version of jQuery (I believe 1.3.2) is included in 2.8.

    You’ll need to contact 1and1 and have them help you out. I assume, then, that you are on a shared server?

    You need to look at the apache_error_log. Or whatever 1and1 has decided to call the Apache log file.

    You do not need to paste the entire contents of that log file in a post. Since this is a new install, what you should do is clear out the log file then recreate the issue. Then go back to the log file and see what errors are reported. List those errors, just one copy of each unique error, here.

    With what you are experiencing, I would image that there is useful information in your server’s log files. How do you locate the log files?

    This is a very old article, but perhaps still applies to 1and1:

    http://www.devchunks.com/1and1/1and1-hosting-server-logs/

    If that does not help, contact them and ask for assistance in locating your log files.

    Are you having the same issue as the original poster? If not, you should start a new thread as this thread is marked as resolved and few people will pay attention to new support questions in resolved threads.

    Whenever you have issues with BuddyPress, the best course of action is to distill your setup down to the lowest common denominator. This means switching to the default BP themes (bphome and bpmember) that come with BuddyPress and deactivating all plugins except BP.

    What happens then? If you do not have any more issues, then you know it has something to do with your custom theme, one of the plugins, or some combination.

    You then start going back up the ladder one step at a time. Switch the default BP themes for your custom themes. Does the problem return? It not, then is has to do with your plugins. Activate one plugin at a time until the issue returns.

    @Burt-

    Running trunk wpmu developed various issues in the back end widget area. I was testing the bpc alpha 4 widgets and couldn’t change the titles. What?!

    Burt, are you aware of the new Widget API in 2.8? This is why you’re widgets were misbehaving. See here for more details: https://codex.wordpress.org/Version_2.8#New_Widgets_API

    @DJPaul-

    I too am sticking with WPMU 2.7.1 for the time being. I’m just running bleeding edge with BP. Once I switch over to WPMU 2.8 trunk, I’ll give this a go. It sounds like an interesting plugin.

    Are you using custom themes or the default BP themes? If using custom themes, try switching to the default themes and see if the widget works.

    To add additional profile fields, you need to navigate to the BuddyPress submenu grouping in WPMU’s backend. If BuddyPress is installed and activated, this submenu group is found at the very bottom of the menu column.

    So, go to

    BuddyPress > Profile Field Setup

    and set up the additional fields you want.

    By default, when you activate BuddyPress, all of its components are activated. To selectively disable a component, you go to

    BuddyPress > Component Setup

    You need to log into WPMU’s backend as site admin ( /wp-login.php), and then go to

    Site Admin > Options > Allow new registrations

    and set the options you want.

    Also I am unable to create an extended profile like shown in some of the demos. It only allows me change the “base” and avatar. I can’t put birthday, location, etc.

    the confirmation email is not sent to newly registered users

    It seems that WPMU is doing its duties fine. PHP is responsible for taking care of the mail sending. The issue is most likely with your mail server. Check your mail server’s logs.

    If you continue to see this behavior, you should contact your host.

    found this on my error log…

    [27-Jun-2009 13:20:07] PHP Warning: array_merge() [function.array-merge]:

    Concerning the array_merge() error, that function has to do with registering new user blogs. This does not affect the initial registration of new users nor the sending of registration emails. There is a fix for this particular issue in this thread.

    This is not an bug with BuddyPress. This is not a bug with anything else either.

    There is a minimum image file size (50px by 50px) that must be uploaded for avatars. If the file is smaller in width and/or height than the minimum required, the extra pixels will be black.

    You could change the minimum file dimensions, but it seems to me that the set minimum is more than sufficient.

    Peter-

    Are you using BP v1.0.1 or 1.0.2? i believe there was an issue with cookies that could cause this problem in v1.0.1.

    Did you clear your browser’s cache in between registration attempts?

    @jeffsayre

    Switch to the default BuddyPress themes and deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress. Try the registration process again. If it works, switch to the FaceBuddy theme. Try registration again. If it is still working, activate one of the plugins, etcetera.

    You must distill your BP environment down to the lowest common denominator–default themes, no plugins except BudddyPress activated–and see if everything works with that set up. If so, you then add one thing back at a time (first your custom theme, then one plugin at a time) until the problem occurs again.

    Let us know what you discover.

    Kunal17-

    What I meant was you start at that changeset (r1468) and go through all of the changesets up to the current one (r1593). Although, you should be okay only going up to r1577. So, that is at least 109 changesets you have to search through. To navigate through the changesets, look near the upper right-hand cornor. You’ll see these links:

    <- Previous Change | Next Change ->

    Look for any changes to the theme files. I do not know how many of the revisions deal with themes.

    i have set to enable the new user registration and blog creation option in the wp-admin/wpmu-options.php page.

    What you need to do is log into WPMU’s backend as site admin ( /wp-login.php), and then go to:

    Site Admin > Options > Allow new registrations

    and set the options you want.

    Another question: Are there any upgrades to the default member & home themes from 1.0 to 1.0.2?

    Yes. There have been an number of changes and improvements. You have two choices:

    1. Make a copy of the v1.0.2 default themes and modify those copies to match your current theme customizations
    2. Or, go through the changesets in trac starting here and look for any theme changes and then make those in your current themes

    Okay, why don’t both of you go through this list to see if there are other commonalities:

    Please post your response to those questions here.

    The only plugins that need to be deactivated are those that are dependent upon BuddyPress. So, if you don’t have any of those in mu-plugins, you should be fine keeping them as is.

    Andy is working on some code that will automatically deactivate all BP-dependent plugins whenever BP gets deactivated. Of course, this code will need to be retroactively added to all current BP plugins out there, but I imagine plugin devs will simply add this coding to one of their next versions.

    I have not heard of one. Your best bet, as I said, is to contact the developers of those plugins and ask them if the are working on supporting BuddyPress.

    You could also post a suggestion here or, if you’re willing to pay for the development of such a plugin, post a job here.
