The problem with separating the theme completely from the core (right now) is without a fully functioning theme, there’s no way to actually use BuddyPress. Even the bbPress plugin comes with a small set of fallback template files (as a child theme of twentyten) to display forums. The core of this problem is there is no way to create new WordPress functionality without it logically needing new template files to display it. The approach I took with bbPress (which I’d like to port to BuddyPress) is to monitor query_vars and template_include, and replace the_content() with a template part inside an output buffer. With this in mind, bp-default would get turned into a bunch of template parts that don’t all require header, footer, and sidebar calls, and those parts would just drop into any existing WordPress theme whenever they need to, correctly, all the time.
In reply to: Call to arms – Own your taskNice to see everyone stepping up and getting involved. You rock. Exciting stuff.

Closing this.
Also fixed our own download page, which was similarly broken.
Try again?

Should be back now.
Found the culprit. Working on a fix.
In reply to: Call to arms – Own your task@djpaul – Sounds good. When you get a moment can you post up a rough outline of tasks and expectations on bpdevel? We’ll use it as the running stream of communication as needed, to keep it public. Maybe make a master ticket in trac right away too, to post diff’s, files, etc…
In reply to: Call to arms – Own your task@uloga – Creating a robust replacement for bp-default isn’t something to do on a whim. Let’s get a few people to collaborate rather than compete, and see who wants to do what. Deal?
In reply to: Call to arms – Own your task@uloga – Are these things you are able/willing complete on your own, or are these ideas for a core wishlist?
In reply to: Call to arms – Own your taskCSS
Decoupling the CSS into smaller pieces seems like it would go against the cardinal rule of minimizing HTTP requests to speed up page load times. Having everything turned on would load up 10 separate CSS files, just for the theme itself. They’d naturally be enqueued hierarchically so they cascade correct, so if one of them hangs for some reason, you end up with theme spaghetti.I’d suggest giving this a shot and comparing the speed differences with BP trunk on your average web host account to see what the real-world impact would be. If it’s negligible or we can minimize the impact, I’m for it. Would be nice to separate it into structure, colors, etc… too.
Shortcodes
check out how the bbPress plugin is incorporating shortcodes, and how it’s theme compatibility works to get a head start on what will get ported into BuddyPress core in the near future (after 1.3) – I’m filtering the_content() and loading template parts in an output buffer, to inject bbPress forums into *any* existing WordPress theme with a page.php template file (with appropriate measures taken to minimize conflicts, etc…)Supporter
The Supporter idea is neat, but doesn’t sound so much directly related to BuddyPress core. In the past, these kinds of donation based tasks don’t usually raise enough money for the hours of development that are involved in making something happen. Plus, who holds the money in escrow, who handles taxes and payouts, etc… It all gets really complicated, so you have your work cut out for you there.
In reply to: Call to arms – Own your task1. Decisions over options – and you’ll want to pair up with Maz and anyone else that’s interested in a new theme
2. How does privacy prevent spam?
3. I would suggest making this as a plugin to start. Having a proof of concept here is key.
4. Forums are already mine.In reply to: Call to arms – Own your taskWithout template files to display content, there is no BuddyPress. Having just gone through this with the bbPress plugin, it’s impossible to create custom WordPress components without theme files to back them up.
Are you saying you want to make a non-ajax default theme that is easier to extend?
In reply to: Call to arms – Own your taskI’m a little confused by that too Maz. Any plugin can register a theme directory anywhere they want, and where the files sit doesn’t change any of the functionality. What specifically are you proposing?
@brentjacobsen – Do you have access to your PHP/apache error logs to see where exactly the memory error is happening? How much available memory is being allocated to PHP? Remember that the more custom PHP code you pull in (with plugins, elaborate themes, etc…) is the bigger that buffer gets, and eventually it’ll pop once it hits the limit. That limit may get reached at different times for different users depending on the number of groups they’re in, the number of pending invitations they have, the page that is trying to be displayed, etc…
In reply to: WordPress Nightly Breaks BuddypressThis will be a non-issue when the bbPress plugin eventually replaces the stand-alone version currently included in BuddyPress. Until then, the next version of BuddyPress will continue to work the same as before in this regard. Props @djpaul for being on the case.

@nexla Sorry, I honestly am not sure what it is that you’re trying to say. Unless I am totally losing it, you started this topic in regards to the BuddyPress global constant in the title. I provided a solution to that in BuddyPress trunk and a screen shot of it in the works. Is there something I’m misunderstanding?
@nexla Sorry I don’t understand the question?
First pass at this is now in BuddyPress trunk. It relies on this WordPress core patch to prevent the following from occurring:

The lack of BP theme authors, and the newness and complexities of supporting child themes in the repo makes this an easy target for confusion for everyone. I remember glancing over Otto’s update but I never got a heads up it was official for BP. Unless it’s just alwas been that way and it predates me.
Ideally we would want a dedicated BuddyPress theme reviewer that’s familiar with BP and has the time to maintain those specific themes, test them with future versions of BuddyPress, etc. Even more ideally if it was someone active in the forums and trac. Being a theme reviewer is a volunteer position that comes with it lots of responsibilities and expectations. It also doesn’t help that bp-default triggers a ton of debug notices in the 1.2 branch.
As my focus shifts around and as I settle in to my new role at Automattic, I’m slowly picking up access and getting familiar with things like this that I’ve never rounds before.

No support for child themes in the repo yet, at least not officially. I think a few old reliable ones may be in there as special cases.
Chances are for BP specific child themes to make it into the repo, it would also need to be a WordPress theme that would work just fine without BuddyPress active at all.
Sounds like your web host is heading you off at the pass and forcing a smaller memory limit. Who is your host?
In reply to: BuddyPress broke WordPressYour web host and/or hosting package aren’t providing your site enough memory to load BP up. By chance are you running a non-English installation?
In reply to: Custom Profile Field Limit to 5 numbers? In BP 1.3 you’ll be able to use XProfile Field Meta to do exactly this, although no examples of it are currently in the development build.
There will be a 1.2.8 coming soon, and we’ll take a look at this time issue and see if we can make sense of it.
