    Another side note from Andy’s last paragraph, these BuddyPress extensions could come in just about any form; additional theme files to be added as a “plus pack” (remember those?!) or a plugin to override and replace existing files as a child theme, or included in the next version of the theme itself.

    Also, if you’re paying attention the directory of the included parent theme is “bp-sn-parent.” It stands for “BuddyPress Social Network Parent” which insinuates that theme authors are encouraged to create their own parent themes for something other than social networking, and opens the door for other parent theme sets to be included in the core if they’re rad enough.

    Say someone makes a sweet micro-blogging theme ala Twitter, that gives us “bp-mb-parent” to let you switch between totally different setups. Or say someone switches the emphasis away from blogs and users and shifts it to the discussion or support forums; that gives us “bp-df-parent” and “bp-sf-parent”

    Andy’s right too. The majority of people so far interested in BuddyPress have been people that are also first being introduced to WPMU and starting a social network. Very few support questions come through asking how to port this existing theme to fit BuddyPress. The ones that do are typically answered by the theme author or the person is so devoted to making it work, that they convert the theme themselves.

    I’m really not sure how much harder it is for existing themes to use BuddyPress; it’s just different, but in a better way in my opinion.

    I usually reserve the admin account for administrative duties, and create a second admin account for myself for this very reason, and for the security of keeping the main admin account less exposed.

    The problem also comes with display names including non URL safe chars, spaces, etc… You’d have to run the display name through a bunch of filters and then replace the loggedin_user->domain and displayed_user->domain with your result.

    Ticked as resolved.

    @modemlooper, quite the contrary actually. If you make any theme a child of the bp-sn-parent theme, it will inherit the files that it doesn’t already have, and you can CSS your way out of any style issues there may be.

    catinw12, you shouldn’t need to create any new profiles anywhere. All of the .org sites should provide you a unified login/password combo to use on wordpress.org, bbpress.org, buddypress.org, and all of their respective trac’s.

    Sub directory installs of WPMU can be tricky, and hard to trouble-shoot. If you can avoid it, you’re better off. If you can’t, the next best thing would be to install it in a static subdomain, and run a subdirectory type installation.

    If that makes sense?

    I can see different people wanting different things out of XProfile, but at the moment there isn’t a file upload option. Basically, you would need to write an entire API for where that upload physically ends up and how you retrieve it, which is more plugin territory than it is built into XProfile.

    My suggestion would be to look at how other plugins handle the upload process, and see if you can borrow some code from them?

    If “James” wasn’t my middle name, it would probably be “Support.”

    John Support Jacoby just doesn’t have the same ring to it though… ;)

    You’re very welcome.

    Shouldn’t change anything? I would maybe build a custom function to get around globalizing anything in the theme though…

    Something like…

    function custom_member_list_xprofile_data($field) {
    global $site_members_template;

    return xprofile_get_field_data($field, $site_members_template->member->id);
    }

    Then in your members-loop.php use it like…

    <?php echo custom_member_list_xprofile_data('Address') ?>

    In members-loop.php, the function “bp_the_site_member()” loads up the next user in the loop, so you have the data there to use; you just need to gather it correctly and prepare it for display.

    Which version of BuddyPress are you using?

    In the trunk, you’d be best to use…

    function xprofile_get_field_data( $field, $user_id )

    …to get what you’re after.

    Used like…

    $retval = xprofile_get_field_data( 'Address', $bp->loggedin_user->id );

    That would return the value of the field “Address” for the currently logged in user.

    In BP1.1 it would be easiest to make a custom theme file to do this inside the member-loop.php. You could check the field name and if it = the name of your field, then you can grab the next field, format it the way you want, and continue.

    What BP version are you using?

    If I understand correctly, Jedbarish is asking if he starts his site off with User blogs turned off, and 50 people register, and he wants to turn blogs on, can he go back and retroactively give those users blogs.

    @Jedbarish, if my assumption is correct, then the flat answer is “no, WPMU/BuddyPress can’t do this for you.” However, a WPMU plugin could be made to do this (most likely by counting the number of blogs a user already belongs to,) but the problem is that you won’t know what they would want the name of their blogs to be so you can’t create it accurately. You could guess at their username.domain.com, but it means more manual labor to change it if they don’t like it.

    From the topic you referenced, it sounds like you moved the location of your WordPress files.

    It seems harmless enough, but it can cause a whole world of hurt (like you’re finding out now.)

    Sadly there isn’t a magic reset button to make everything go back into alignment, so chances are that to get things up and running you’re going to be debugging and manually editing some database entries.

    If keeping your existing data is important, and you’re in over your head, then it’s time to hire a professional to snoop around and see what they can salvage.

    Yes, it will still be possible to do this, but it will take a little smoke and mirrors until forums aren’t only for groups in BuddyPress. Forums don’t care who made them, but BuddyPress still needs a mechanism to gather and present the information outside of a group setting.

    If it doesn’t make the 1.1 release I’m hoping to find the spare time to offer a “forum directory” plugin at the 1.1 launch, probably similar to the members and groups directories.

    @allenweiss, both of the files need to go in your active WordPress HOME theme, not your bpmember theme.

    You will need to narrow down which lists are causing you a problem, and in your CSS add…

    list-style: none;…to each one.

    It definitely gives a nice little added polish to the widgets.

    If you’re familiar with Trac, SVN, and the WordPress Coding Standards, you could give a go at creating a patch to have stuff like this implemented into the core for you, to your credit of course.

    If you’re not familiar with the above but would still like to see these changes make it into the core, send me a PM and I’ll put together a patch for you using your plugin.

    Imagine the P2 theme will less flashiness.

    No, it’s not on the TestBP site yet.

    It’s on the 1.1 roadmap and will probably make its way in if Andy stops calling me names. :)

    Matt, does the other post I just stickied answer this for you?

    @Robert, edited the post to reflect this little typo. Thanks for the catch!

    @Toly, you’re correct, but my post was still a little off. Thanks for helping clarify!

    @Matt Kern, that is correct. You can also do something like…

    bp_core_load_template( 'fun/chubacabra', true );

    …if you want to put all your chubacabra files in a directory in your themes root.

    @JasonG, we’ve got an awful lot of stickies. I’m going to add it to the Wiki instead :cough: :)

    @everyone, this method shouldn’t change much by the time BP1.1 comes around, but keep an eye out just in case.

    I’m petitioning with Andy to make the settings pages themeable in 1.1. I might have to do it myself. :)

    Welcome Albert.

    This has been covered quite a bit in the forums, so search around for a bit and see if you can find what you’re looking for. Long story short, it uses something dubbed “deep integration” for lack of a better term, but it isn’t recommended for everyone and will be an obsolete method soon.
