You’re right. There is a lot constantly going on, and it’s dizzying to keep up with it all. We try really hard on our end to balance updates with backwards compatibility, to make sure things run as smoothly as possible while also fixing bugs and problems.

Some of what you’re talking about is that, where fixing bugs leads to other bugs. Some of it comes from us doing something incorrectly for a very long time, setting a bad example, and when WordPress calls us out and deprecates something, it breaks things down the line later.

I think the bigger take-away is that running your own social network isn’t as easy as it should be. We can do a better job at making it simpler, and also at setting the expectation that there’s a huge leap from having 1 blog to having hundreds or thousands of users. Social networks like Flickr or Twitter have dedicated staff to keep things running smoothly, and trying to do that as one non-developer is currently pretty intimidating, and maybe not always a good idea.

I don’t think it’s a funding issue, I think it’s an education issue down the tree from WordPress core to BuddyPress core to third party plugin authors. Also, we try really hard to do tandem releases with WordPress core, but not all plugin authors have the ability to stay on top of their projects like we do.

The BuddyPress core team is making changes for the better to improve the experience you’re talking about, but they are still baby steps so we don’t perpetuate the issue further.

Odd. Create a ticket at http://buddypresss.trac.wordpress.org with the details and a patch.

Around and around… You specifically said this site sucks to use as a support forum. I asked what you think we can do improve it. You tell me I’m misunderstanding but then confirm my understanding.

I’m calm as a cucumber, but something productive doesn’t happen here, I’ll be calmly closing this topic. :)

At the end of the day, this is a support site for BuddyPress. Us opening up groups for third-party plugin support was an experiment of its own, and a successful one I think. We put your plugin and support information in one convenient Group as opposed to mixing all of them together with tags like WordPress.org does.

That said, there is nothing anyone can ever do here that will give it more emphasis than BuddyPress itself. I actually think its great if you outgrow your space here, as it means you’re doing well and being successful, fostering an essential part of the BuddyPress ecosystem.

I like the idea of eventually having a popular plugin page. If that happens, clearly BP Media stands out. I think the best way to keep things running smoothly currently is to focus on BuddyPress core development and support, and iterate on the third-party plugin experience for what it is.

At the risk of sounding too obvious, you’d want to loop through each group, get its slug, and add it probably as a term in a custom topic taxonomy. Then loop through each groups topics, and add that term to each one.

Thanks for the feedback. Contributions are always welcome.

In one sentence I’m being sensitive, in the next you’re never posting here again. Hm.

The issues you bring up now aren’t with the site, they are with trying to commingle your support with BuddyPress.org support. Your post above contradicts your earlier post, and I’m confused at what exactly you think we could do differently to improve your experience.

Don’t think I’m immune to the basis of the challenges you’re talking about. Between the .org sites, Twitter, Facebook, Skype, IRC, and email, everyone wants help from every angle up to and including my personal Facebook account. It’s up to you to set appropriate limits and filter support where you want it most.

If the BuddyPress Group Forum didn’t work for you, that doesn’t mean the whole site sucks. Even if it does, what do you suggest we do to make it better? What iterations do you recommend we make to make it the best site we can? It’s our site, we’re free to experiment.

I don’t understand. There was never a list of preferred plugin forums before, and I don’t see a compelling reason for there to be now. No third party plugin deserves front and center on a site that’s dedicated to supporting itself.

If your forum has more traffic, it isn’t because it’s on the first page of anything; it’s because you’re using it for its intended purpose and have paid employees to staff it. Even if I’m wrong and those aren’t valid enough reasons, core BuddyPress components don’t even have their own dedicated forums; why would BP-Media take any precedence over BuddyPress’s own core?

@modemlooper – If you weren’t an admin in your own group, you could have asked any one of us whom you talk to daily to fix that for you.

@foxly – Are you talking about https://buddypress.org/community/groups/ ? If so, the page is still there but hidden from te UI for now. Your plugin still shows up in /extend/plugins/ just like everyone else’s does; what more do you expect to happen?

Overall, the general responses from you both are to not let any good deed go unpunished. Anything that changes and you’re there to criticize why it ‘SUCKS’ or some other thing is exponentially better. There’s a line where feedback becomes toxic, and you’re both walking it.

same problem as before, I can see page1 of my prior forum posts, but no link to reach older posts….

Should be able to click “Load More” in the activity stream to see more entries.

You mentioned updating documents? Is this a core BuddyPress issue, or an issue with another plugin that isn’t sending emails?

When we introduce bbPress 2.1 into BuddyPress 1.6, you’ll get this automatically. :)

We’re running WordPress 3.3 here at BuddyPress.org, and also running the 1.5.2 pre-release. Will be working out kinks to get it packaged up asap.

I still don’t completely understand what you mean.

bbPress Site Wide favorites don’t appear in the profiles at all yet, they will in 1.6/2.1. Same with topics and replies that are posted from within wp-admin. It sounds silly, but I didn’t feel it right to trigger activity updates when posting in the dashboard while bbPress 2.0 was still new. So these are less bugs than they are unfinished features.

Mentions work, and appear in activity streams and trigger notifications. testbp.org runs a vanilla install of everything, and they work there without issue.

The database update is a prompt you see in your dashboard. If you don’t see the prompt, then there’s nothing that needs doing.

The Forums in BuddyPress 1.5 are in a transition, so it’s important to be as specific as you can about what you’re experiencing.

To clarify, both Group and Site Wide Forums should be creating activity stream items. At no point should Group Forums not create activity. Site Wide forum activity logging might stop working if BuddyPress needs a database update.

If mentions and favorites aren’t working either, it leads me to believe something else is not working properly in your installation. Conflicting plugins or invalid file uploads somewhere possibly.

For the time being, your display name needs to be different than your login to update your activity stream.

You might need to update your permalinks for the site your forums are activated on.
