Out of about 6000 members, we have around 1000 who have no entry with the type last_activity' in thewp_bp_activity` table.

Within Buddypress group the setting allow the group to be public or private! However when the group is public and a member of the group post something, that post goes to activity stream on the front end. Hey, I want to modify the members widget by adding additional markup etc. I really want to avoid changing the plugin core, I’d rather take the code and make a plugin or place the code in something like functions.php or bp-custom.php to over write it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or explain how I can do this?
