In reply to: BuddyPress Instillation
Are you using BuddyPress 1.5 – I ask as it would mean checking you are using the template pack for this latest version.
The process for the template pack is if it has file permissions it will put files in correct places – if it doesn’t you do. I assume you went through a manual one (ie; adding in yourself) however it seems perhaps you didn’t put them in the structure they were listed in the pack. / would be in this case the root or bottom folder of your theme ie; themename/
In reply to: Make ‘Acivity Stream’ main pageIt may depend on the theme you are using (some can be a little troublesome over this) but I just did a sanity check on the default 1.5 BuddyPress theme and all is well there with setting the front page as activity stream.
What I did was this:
1. Go to settings > reading
2. Front page displays – select a static page
3. Front page: select activitySave and should work for you.
I’m a thinking something squiffy is up with either another plugin or theme or browser cache on that one then. It would be using scripting for the drag and drop so perhaps that’s what is sticking.
Did you try using firebug or even the default BuddyPress 1.5 theme with no other plugins and browser cache cleared? Just trying to level the playing field.
That said if it works now you probably can’t test but worth noting for future maybe.
In reply to: Help! Lost Access to WebsiteDid you upgrade to BuddyPress 1.5 and use the updated template pack?
Lol you beat me updating
. I’m not sure that a reinstall was required but glad it is working.My only thoughts why the dragging wouldn’t work could be some scripting clash or browser cache.
I’ve just given this a sanity check (all be it on a fresh site) and I was able to move from one group to another a field.
Can you confirm when you click and hold on the field and then move to the tab above (the one corresponding to the group you want to move into) it doesn’t work? That’s what worked for me.
@valuser: Are you enqueuing your CSS for the custom styles you’ve done. To me it looks like you aren’t. There are 2 things at play here:
1. You need to now enqueue any styles keeping order ie; last style you want enqueue that last
2. !important is a little like a kid sticking their hand up in class it will get paid attention to above all else – therefore yes adding !important does work but shouldn’t be what you use you should use the ‘cascading’ nature of CSS.
In reply to: BuddyPress 1.5 compatibility for plugins and themesThanks to those that updated this it’s still a really important thread. I’ve been out for a little bit but trying to get back into seeing what’s being updated now. I think I’m right in saying @Foxly and the great bpmedia team are firmly on top of the spreadsheets for this.
Yes, the template pack git page is a great one as that’s where you get the work in progress version – so great to see things happening before even release.
As 1.5 approaches it’s going to be so tempting to just switch but this list and the links in the codex should hopefully bring a pause for caution to some minds. In most cases as seen you’ll be fine but a pause never causes an issue.
In reply to: Admin Bar disabled, but free space remain!There are 2 places where I see this:
body {
padding-top: 25px;
}This basically is your problem. It’s in style.css and also the adminbar call. It’s a little hacky but you can do either this:
body {
padding-top: 0px;
}As the last line in your style.css or child style.css. Or if that fails to work force it (not a great way but works):
body {
padding-top: 0px!important;
}In reply to: My buddypress site: yeah! HackneyReally cool I have a soft spot for community use like this of BuddyPress – great use. Nice amount of members and done from ground up always puts a smile on my face

If you want to use the child style yes that’s what you need to do
In reply to: Nav Bar GlitchJust adding to that because I apparently can’t edit…
If by selected you mean ‘on state’ as in on that page then it would be a classname like this:
#nav li.current_page_item a
Do you have current_page_item anywhere in your CSS?
In reply to: Nav Bar GlitchA slight question – you say CSS is designed to show the page? To me this would be more PHP that would be doing this auto placing of the page. Would it be possible to paste in what code (if you know it) does this in your navigation please. Be good to see what the calls are.
In reply to: ConfusingMy philosophy is everyone starts knowing nothing we all know varying things and should share to help each other. Whilst a lot of what I think you want to know would be helped if you can by installing BuddyPress on a a site somewhere and exploring or trying the test site (http://testbp.org/). Let me see if I can help a little.
Traditional forums would be what bbpress (https://bbpress.org/) would be your solution for. Now, in saying that BuddyPress uses bbpress for forums. So it’s a mutual use in sense of BuddyPress.
The way groups work are yes by having forums. The way I like to think of them are hang outs / clubhouses where there is a link between members and they can discuss. I may have an interest in dogs (the main site) but I may only want to talk about dog training or labradors (those would be groups). That’s a bit of a broad explanation but hopefully gets the notion across.
Now can you have traditional forums – yes with bbpress but groups is a more segemented talking.
Others may have their own breakdowns of it but to me this is what groups and forums are in simple terms.
Some more links to share with you though that may help it make a bit more sense:
https://buddypress.org/about/story/
And here is from the buddypress.org home page about groups:
“Powerful public, private or hidden groups allow your users to break the discussion down into specific topics. Extend groups with your own custom features using the group extension API.”
And about forums:
“Full powered discussion forums built directly into groups allow for more conventional in-depth conversations.”
In reply to: How do i let users upload their own themes?I’m going to assume you mean under WordPress not BuddyPress specifically and using Multisite? Is that right? If not what do you mean by theme?
In reply to: BuddyPress 1.5 Resources: Tutorials, Videos and InfoWere you looking for some tutorials / info or accidental post?
In reply to: my top menu bar is missingDid you change the settings on when it should show or is it not showing for all users? If that is the case it is probably something to do with a scripting error however if you can a link to see your site would help in diagnosis.
First port of call would be to turn off all other plugins try with default theme also if still getting issue. What extent you can do that would depend on your set up but does sound like a clash if the setting is to show it and you’re the right role you’ve set (if you set one to see it).
In reply to: Admin Bar and Spacing IssuesI will add you’d need to add a clause of ‘if the logged in tick isn’t there use the padding-top – it’s really 2 fold the CSS and the PHP check to see if that check is there I think.
In reply to: Admin Bar and Spacing IssuesMy idea would be to use the body class:
.logged-in
For instance we have the following class and style for the padding:
body {
padding-top: 25px;
}
We could use something like this:
body.logged-in{
padding-top: 25px!important;
}body{
padding-top: 0px!important;
}
This would be in the child theme and unfortunately requires some bunny killing by the use of !important as a dirty fix.
A ticket does seem sensible to me with a simple class change on if logged in like I’ve put there. Whilst we do need that padding there it just sticking with no admin bar probably isn’t best.
In the ticket / non hacky method I’d suggest it without the bunny killing code
:
body.logged-in{
padding-top: 25px;
}body{
padding-top: 0px;
}
In reply to: custom themeAre you using the_content or the_excerpt to show the content? the_excerpt should give you exactly that an excerpt so if using you would need to make that smaller:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/the_excerpt
Specifically useful to you would be this:
function new_excerpt_length($length) {
return 20;
}
add_filter('excerpt_length', 'new_excerpt_length');
In reply to: BP style help needed pleaseYou appear to not have a style for the links so as a result yes it is going to default.
Try this:
a, a:link{
color: #ffffff;
}
a:visited{
color: #ffffff;
}
a:hover{
color: #ffffff;
}
I listed hover and visited separately as ideally you’d show those states with a colour variation even if a slight one of #eeeeee or something.
Put the code in your stylesheet / child theme preferably would be one to have this (don’t know what set up you are using). It should then work otherwise please post back and say where put to aid diagnosis.
In reply to: Can i disable the site-wide activity stream?Have you tried: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/private-buddypress/activity/ ?
In reply to: Show template paths for debugging purposes?You mean what is using activity / groups and files in it unless I’m mistaken?
I can’t think of a quicker method than having the default theme open with child and following the path it’s fairly accessible in 1.5.

In reply to: Submenu activities bar disappearedSounds to me like a scripting error and your comment about loading then finding issue also lends weight to that. Have you been down the remove all (if can) and add back in each, test? If so you don’t say if without any it worked as that would lend weight to that theory of scripting issue with plugins.
