I am finding that if the user clicks the activation link and then logs in, all is fine but if they subsequently click the activation link they get to the page that says ‘Invalid activation key’. Well that makes some sense I suppose (the key is no longer valid as it has been used) but it would make a lot more sense if it simply said, ‘This activation key has already been used, your account is therefore active so why not try logging in?’ or something similar.

I guess that wold not solve problems if somehow the activation key was totally screwed up, but the system must surely know whether a key is invalide because it has been used already or invalid because it is nonsense.

@bmk0220 What you are asking for is exactly what I need as well. I would love to see this in a future Buddypress. Without it, Multisite is limited for use with Buddypress.

Have you made any progress? Have you tried, for instance, Ron Rennick’s bp-multi-network plug-in (link above)?

Yes – same problem. I am using Bp 1.5 with the twenty eleven theme with buddypress template pack and I don’t want the activity stream activated – but seems I have to have it.
Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_activity_get_permalink() , bp-members/bp-members-template.php on line 590. Would love some help on this.

Did anyone find the problem? Because this is now happening to me as well. Please post if you have any news.
    Thank you

@modemlooper : Great! If you have any spare time I would appreciate it if you could give me some guidance here.

Hi @modemlooper – I had come across your plug-in – maybe you can help me because I am not using the default theme so the buddypress menu isn’t there. Instead I have a jquery mega menu and I’d love to add the profile menu items to this. That would be ideal. Do you think this is possible?

You will also find further occurrences of the word ‘group’ in many of the plug-ins you might have installed.
Getting rid of them all is difficult as I have discovered. It is also hard to see the instances where you might want to leave it as ‘group’ e.g. in the dashboard. I believe you will just have to edit all of the individual language files or in the case of a plug-in where there are only one or two you might want to edit the code directly – as long as you remember what you did when you come to upgrade the plug-in.

Did you get this working? I have the exact same issue.
BP 1.5, and a child theme using BP template pack.
I have successfully used a language file on another site (BP 1.2.8) so I thought I understood the process.
Has something changed in the way language files are handled in 1.5?

I am trying to find out about this activation page and activation key that it seems I don’t need but gets added automatically. How did this arise? Can anyone shed any more light please?

I am disappointed that BuddyPress does not simply use and extend the WP profile fields. It complicates things.
And synching profiles with mailchimp plug-ins is now more complex – ok it doesn’t work – for me anyway.
BuddyPress is a WP plug-in, not a standalone system so it should plug in to WP, including profiles. Bp says it offers extended profiles, not different profiles.
Incidentally my users want Last name, First name, just to complicate things further.

Buddypress auto group join plug-in by Scott Hair is a help in getting members into the right groups initially, but I would still like to be able to skip the ‘become friends’ step before inviting people to my group(s).

I have logged in as a different user from my Mac, tried Firefox and it was fine, too. Something very odd about my Firefox. Especially as I have upgraded to the latest version and had this problem with both versions. And disabled all plugins and extensions. I may have to give up on this, as it seems I am the only one affected!

Hi! @mercime Sorry for the delay in getting back.
Problem is ONLY with Firefox. And only with my ‘live’ site not my development site.
Here is the development site: http://kenrichman.com/harc/
Here is the live site: http://www.harc-network.org
Firefox cannot load the front page.
If you have Firefox on a mac could you try it? If you get the same problem the firewall will block you from the site’s virtual server.
I am using the latest Firefox on a mac.

@embergermedia – just wondering if you’ve had a chance to look into this?
Fortunately my site won’t be using the activity stream – yet!

    @Marcus
Thanks very much for this – haven’t tried it yet but am about to.
But what I think is really needed is simply the option for the group admin to choose the default tab – as part of the group settings.
I wil have several groups that will need different defaults. Can your code accommodate that in some way?
Who is up to writing a plug-in to do that? Not me I’m afraid..!
I also agree that Home should be changed to Activity.

I would like to know also – it sounds easy, but is it?

@hnla – re: your suggestion – displaying favourite only to logged in user if also displayed user – I agree this would be a good fix, as I don’t really want favourites to be visible to all.
If you can help with the code to achieve this I’d be grateful as the site is about to go live.

    Hello!
I have also been asked for this type of feature – people want a site-wide library. So I have implemented the library as a public group. Well, it works!
But they would also love to be able to add details about each document such as author, publisher and so on as separate fields. I don’t have much idea how to do that and would really appreciate any pointers.

Great – that worked. I added:

Lowercase letters and numbers, no spaces, no punctuation.

However I’d still like to put this string in its proper place along with the other input field descriptions. Can anyone advise where would that be? Where are they stored?

    @kenrichman

    Participant

    Terriffic – I’ll give that a go.

    Thank you.

Thanks Paul, yes – I have read about group privacy settings, implemented them and they seem to work. Of course they do not extend to profiles, as the settings are just for groups. So is that the only real issue? People reading other people’s profiles? For my present use that is something I want people to be able to do, so I am not concerned. I AM worried that information in forums that is supposed to be for members only can somehow be accessed by others, or by members who are not in the appropriate groups.

I would appreciate advice generally on tightening security on BuddyPress sites, and any known issues being made public so we can be aware of them and advise users.

Thank you guys, really good to know this is being worked on.
I agree that favourites is not the sort of thing for public knowledge.
I would really appreciate some help with the code to add this fix. It may sound quite trivial to some but for me I’m afraid it isn’t.

Much happier now having created a translation file. Wish I’d known before that is the best way to go about it.

    @kenrichman

    All sorted …!
I created a new language file – worth doing because I could fix up all the American spellings (well, there are one or two) to UK and customse various messages to make them nicer.

This link in the codex was a great help.
