Hi I have the same problem.
I think it has to do with the main theme.
I use smartmag theme with a child theme, when a change back to Twenty Twelve theme everything works fine.

Thanks for response.
I know about group roles.
I probably use a PUBLIC group but I need to control which become a member for my group!
If I use PUBLIC group is there any plugin to control user registration to that group?

I have the same problem.
My installation is WP 3.8.1 BP 1.9.1 my theme is child of Default BP theme.
