Where are you hosted? I suggest starting from scratch. This time, do not use Fantastico but install WordPress 3.5.1 manually, i.e., s/FTP upload.

@pjfbncil Contributors and Authors should be able to upload media by default. Have you tried deactivating plugins one by one except BuddyPress and checked which plugin/s might be causing the issue?

Have you tried changing to BP Default theme where BP is installed, creating a new post and comment in a/another subsite and checking if it shows up in activity stream?

@resom that’s really strange. Is this a new installation? Have you deactivated plugins except BuddyPress to check if there’s some conflict?

@intimez the documentation for installing the forums has been overhauled and the solution is there per my post in the link you gave above.
